TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 6 Florida and Alabama soccer teams played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie Friday night at the Alabama Soccer Complex.
After a scoreless opening half, Florida (10-1-2, 4-0-1 SEC) took a 1-0 lead early in the second half on a goal by Tahnai Annis, her eighth of the year, at 46:27. The scoring play started when Erika Tymrak took a hard shot in the box that deflected off an Alabama defender. The ball fell to the right of the box where Taylor Travis was making a run. She touched the ball to Annis.
Alabama (8-2-2, 3-0-2 SEC) scored in the final minute of regulation when senior Brooke Rogers scored from in close after a pass from Victoria Frederick off an Alabama corner kick.
The Gators did have their chances in the overtime period, recording seven shots. Tymrak’s 12-yard shot in the 96th minute was stopped by Alabama’s Justine Bernier. In the 97th minute, Ashlee Elliott served into the box to Holly King, who headed the ball but again Bernier made the stop at the post.
In the 107th minute, Annis took a shot that was deflected in the box. The shot had both benches calling for a whistle – Florida seeking a hand-ball call while Alabama pleading for an offsides call. With under two minutes remaining in the second overtime, McKenzie Barney shot from 10 yards out skimmed the crossbar.
Florida visits Auburn (8-5, 2-3 SEC) Sunday at 3 p.m. in a match that will be televised by ESPNU. Auburn lost 3-1 to No. 15 South Carolina Friday. In other matches, Vanderbilt beat Arkansas, 2-1; Tennessee beat Mississippi State, 1-0 in 2OT; Georgia and Mississippi battled to a 0-0 tie in double overtime; and Louisiana beat Kentucky, 1-0, in double overtime.
