Miller, Ariet winners at Seminole Invitational

TALLAHASSEE – Freshman Ashley Miller turned in the 10th-best women’s discus throw in program history and the Florida track and field teams won two events on the opening day of the Seminole Twilight Invitational at Florida State’s Mike Long Track.

“We got some good things done today,” Florida associate head coach/throws Steve Lemke said. “We knew it was just a matter of time before Ashley Miller did something special. That gives her some great momentum going into the SEC meet. It was also a good day for Mario Ariet in his first competition of the year coming off shoulder surgery with both of them being potential scorers at the SEC meet. We‘re looking forward to more good things tomorrow.”

Miller picked up her first collegiate victory with a personal-record toss of 169 feet. Junior Keely Medeiros placed second in the event with a throw of 158-10, while freshman Kaitlin Davis was fourth with her 134-3 effort.

In his first meet of the 2010 campaign, Mario Ariet captured the men’s javelin with a toss of 217 feet, 8 inches. Doug Nelson was third with a throw of 206-2.

Junior Kemal Mesic used a season-best throw of 176-1 to place third in the men’s discus, while freshman David Triassi was sixth with his throw of 138 feet.

The second day of the Seminole Twilight Invitational continues at 10 a.m. Saturday.
