Last-minute goal is Florida’s downfall

AUBURN, Ala. – A last-minute goal off a corner kick stunned No. 6 Florida and gave the Auburn women’s soccer team a 1-0 Southeastern Conference victory Sunday at the Auburn University Soccer Complex.

It was the second straight game that the Gators (10-2-2 overall, 4-1-1 SEC East) allowed an opponent to score in the final minute of regulation. Alabama got one Friday night, allowing the Crimson Tide to battle Florida to a 1-1 double-overtime deadlock.

This time, Auburn freshman Jordan Miller got just enough on the ball to put it past Florida goalie Katie Fraine at the near post, the game-winner coming at 89:24 for Auburn (9-5 overall, 3-3 SEC West).

Florida coach Becky Burleigh complimented the Tigers for their effort.

“We just got out-played. Flat out out-played. It’s pretty simple,” Burleigh said. “I think we had too many unforced errors. They had a good game plan with their bunker and looked to counter. Whether the goal came in the 89th minute or the fifth minute, they had better chances than we did and they deserved to win.”

The Gators’ best chance of the opening half came in the fourth minute. A cross from deep in the Auburn half from Jazmyne Avant missed Tahnai Annis as she moved through the box. Auburn goaltender Amy Howard knocked the ball down, but it was briefly loose in six-yard box and McKenzie Barney just missed getting her foot on it.

In the second half, Ashlee Elliott moved from center back to the forward position. In the 71st minute, Elliott juggled the ball and then sent it to top of the box, but just missed Taylor Travis as she made a run through the box. Holly King looked to score off a header on the second consecutive corner kick awarded to the Gators in the 76th minute, but her shot was wide.

Florida is home Friday at 5 p.m. for a Homecoming weekend match against Tennessee. Then No. 18 Georgia comes to James G. Pressly Stadium Sunday to play the Gators in a match that will be televised on CSS at 2 p.m. The first 1,000 fans at Friday’s match receive makarapa-style Gator hats. Fans can also register to win tickets to that evening’s Gator Growl, the Homecoming football game against Mississippi State and for men’s and women’s basketball season tickets.
