Gators rally in second round at Isleworth

ORLANDO – Senior Bank Vongvanij was tied for sixth place on the individual scoreboard and third-ranked Florida moved into a fifth-place tie after Monday’s second round of the Isleworth Invitational golf tournament.

The Gators started out the day in 12th place (in the field of 15 teams) and Vongvanij started out tied for 22nd. Florida’s score of 290 was the lowest score of any team on the day.

“I was really happy with the way we played today,” Florida coach Buddy Alexander said. “We got ourselves back into this tournament. I hope we can come back and have another good round tomorrow.”

Vongvanij had four birdies and two bogeys in his round of 2-under-par 70. Sophomores Tyler McCumber and Phillip Choi each improved on their first-round scores. McCumber had four birdies against five bogeys for a 1-over-par 73, while Choi offset two bogeys with two birdies for an even-par 72. Sophomore Tommy Mou shot 75 and junior Michael Furci carded a 76.

Fourth-ranked Alabama had a second-round 292 for a 583 two-day total and had a seven-stroke lead over No. 13 Louisiana State (294) and No. 17 Stanford (297). Texas Christian was fourth at 589, six shots ahead of Florida and Oklahoma State. Tennessee’s Robin Wingardh was in first place after shooting a 4-under-par 68 for a two-round total of 5-under-par 139. Andrew Yun of Stanford was two shots back at 141 after a 2-under-par 70.
