Gator golfers 2nd at Isleworth, 7th in Vegas

WINDERMERE – Florida moved up two spots into second place after the second round of the Isleworth Invitational. For the second straight day, coach Buddy Alexander’s Gators totaled a 4-over-par 292 and their two-day total of 8-over 584 was four strokes behind leader Oklahoma State and five shots up on third-place Stanford. The final round of the tournament is Wednesday.

“We had another solid day today and I thought we put forth a good team effort,” Alexander said. “I think the past two rounds demonstrate where we are as a team. We just have to be better than our competitors from a team standpoint because we are not going to have the same one or two guys carry us every round. But I am excited and proud of the team to this point. This is the closest we’ve come to the lead this season. We will be in kind of a David and Goliath situation in that the No. 1 team in the country, Oklahoma State, is ahead of us. It should be an interesting day tomorrow and I look forward to learning a little bit more about this team.”

Despite carding a 6-over 78 in his second round, senior Tim McKenney of Scottsdale, Ariz., is tied for ninth with a 2-over 146. Amazingly, McKenney’s score was the highest carded by the Gators and thrown out while figuring the team score.

Freshman Phillip Choi of Orlando went the other way Monday, following up an opening 78 with a 3-under 69 that included six birdies that left him at 3-over 147. Among those tied with Choi is senior teammate Tyson Alexander, who followed an opening 2-over 74 with a 1-over 73 that included three birdies.

Redshirt juniors Andres Echavarria of Colombia and Robbie Wight of Palm Beach carded 74 and 76, respectively, on Monday. Echavarria was tied for 24th at 5-over 149, while Wight was tied for 33rd at 7-over 151.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: Will wins ITA Southeast singles title

ATLANTA – Florida freshman tennis player Allie Will of Boca Raton won a pair of tough matches Monday to win the singles title at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships held at the Bill Moore Tennis Center at Georgia Tech.

With her victory in one of the 12 regionals across the country, Will has a berth in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which will take place Nov. 5-8 at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in West Haven, Conn.

First up Monday was Miami’s Laura Vallverdu, the No. 6 player in the country. Will needed three sets but prevailed 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Then Will met Florida State’s Noemie Scharle, ranked No. 24 in the tournament, and scored a 6-4, 6-0 victory to win her first collegiate singles title.

“For Allie to follow up such a big win against Vallverdu with a solid performance in the final was impressive to see,” Florida coach Roland Thornqvist said. “To beat Vallverdu in the semifinals in and of itself was a great feat because she’s a plyer who reached the NCAA singles final last year. There was a point in the first set of the championship match when she noticed that her style of play really disrupted Noemie, and Allie did a great job of being very physical.”

Will won six singles matches in four days to improve her record to 19-2. Thirteen of those 19 victories are against nationally ranked players. She became the first Florida player to win the title since Jennifer Magley beat Georgia’s Shadisha Robinson in 2003. A year ago, current Florida senior Marrit Boonstra reached the championship final but lost to Georgia’s Chelsey Gullickson.

MEN’S TENNIS: Lacroix and Benneteau win doubles title

ATHENS, Ga. – Florida’s Alexandre Lacroix and Antoine Benneteau won the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championship doubles title Monday at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex, taking an 8-2 decision over Florida State’s Connor Smith and Vahid Mirzadeh.

The victory gives Florida’s French Connection (junior Lacroix and redshirt senior Benneteau are natives of France) one of 16 spots in the doubles draw of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships to be hosted by Yale University in West Haven, Conn., on Nov. 5-8. The Lacroix-Benneteau team is now 8-0 this fall, winning five times last weekend.

Lacroix also is up for consideration for an at-large singles berth in the tournament after advancing to the semifinals where he lost to No. 33-ranked Clint Bowles of Florida State, 7-5, 6-0.
