Florida Gators soccer defeats Iowa State 2-1 on Sunday

Special report on the Florida Gators soccer team:

AMES, Iowa – For the second consecutive afternoon, late theatrics gave Gator athletics a win.

Yesterday in The Swamp, it was Feleipe Franks’ time-expiring pass to Tyrie Cleveland that gave Florida football the 26-20 win over Tennessee.

Today it was Florida fútbol’s turn for a sudden victory.

Freshman Deanne Rose’s golden goal off the perfect pass from Parker Roberts in the 96th minute gave Florida a 2-1 overtime win over Iowa State Sunday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex.

How the Goals Was Scored:
A set play put the Cyclones up 1-0 in the opening half. The corner kick from Merin Mundt bounced in the middle of the box. Hannah Cade hit the volley to score her first goal of the season in the 14th minute.

Another goal off a corner kick knotted the score in the 56th minute. Rose was able to tuck in the ball through the near post scrum off the low kick from Gabby Seiler.

Rose’s golden goal in the 96th minute started with the Gators driving through the Cyclone half. Roberts received the ball above the box and took a few touches before sending a diagonal through ball ahead. Rose caught up and one-touched the ball in from seven yards to the far post.

What Becky Burleigh Said:
On today’s match.
“It was just one of those grind-it-out Sunday games. Different surface, tough turnaround – I think our team handled it better than on the Seattle trip so from that point of view, I think we grew.

“Once we went into overtime, we talked about situational play. We practice situational play every single week. So we were kind of laughing about it ‘Hey, we get situational practice against someone besides ourselves.’ They executed that to perfection, so that was kind of nice to see.” – Florida Head Coach Becky Burleigh
