South Carolina’s 23-21 loss at LSU has helped Florida in more ways than one.
The Gamecocks were No. 3 in last week’s Associated Press Top 25, so their loss vaults the Florida Gators football team up to No. 3 when the latest poll was released on Sunday.
More importantly, the Gators (6-0 overall) improved to 5-0 in Southeastern Conference play and sit atop the Eastern Division standings.
Alabama tops the AP Top 25 with Oregon at No. 2.
Florida is bowl eligible for the second consecutive season under coach Will Muschamp after a 31-17 win at Vanderbilt on Sunday.
The SEC has seven teams in the AP Top 25. Half of the league’s 14 teams also appear in the latest USA Today Coaches’ Poll, released Sunday.
Florida moved up to No. 4 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll. Alabama also tops that poll followed by Oregon and Kansas State. The Gators trail No. 3 Kansas State by just 10 points.
It will be interesting to see where the Gators fit in the first BCS rankings, which will be out at 8:30 p.m. today. Like the AP poll, many projections have unbeaten Florida at No. 3.
