Florida Gators sweep SEC All-Sports title

The University of Florida claimed its 26th overall Southeastern Conference All-Sports Trophy after sweeping the men’s, women’s and overall categories of the 2015-16 GateHouse Media Southeastern Conference All-Sports titles.

Florida is the only school in the conference to sweep all three categories, a feat they have now accomplished 15 times.

The Florida Gators clinched the award before the weekend started, but results weren’t official until the baseball season ended late Saturday night.

“Throughout this season, Gator teams have competed among the nation’s best, as the Southeastern Conference is such a competitive league across all sports,” Jeremy Foley said in a statement. “This sweep of the SEC All-Sports trophies shows the tremendous commitment and drive of our student-athletes and coaches.”

The Gators won five SEC championships — gymnastics, soccer, men’s swimming and diving, softball and women’s tennis.

A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
