Duke Dawson signee profile

Duke Dawson

School: Dixie County

Hometown: Cross City

Height: 5-10

Weight: 191

Position: Defensive Back

Rivals Ranking: 4-star

Recruited by: Travaris Robinson

Notable: Dawson was one of the first players to commit to the Gators in the 2014 recruiting cycle and other than donning a Florida State shirt at his commitment ceremony, he has been all Gator since committing. Dawson enrolled early at Florida and is already on campus, working out with the team and getting ready for spring camp.

Dawson was named a first team All-State 1A defender and was selected to play in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl. He finished his high school career with 122 tackles (99 solo) and seven interceptions.

Dawson is a versatile defensive back who can play on the boundary or slide inside and play nickel as well as being able to make an instant impact on special teams.

With the departures of Jaylen Watkins, Marcus Roberson and Loucheiz Purifoy the Gators badly needed depth in the secondary and Dawson gives them that in 2014.

Quotable:

It’s going to be great playing in Coach Muschamp’s defense. There will be five defensive backs leaving after next season. Coach Muschamp told me he needed a physical cornerback to come in and replace those guys next year.”

Nick de la Torre
A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
