RECRUITING: Cuff gets offer from Gators

Cornerback Vance Cuff has suddenly become a hot commodity in recruiting circles. He went from relative obscurity to camping at Auburn, Georgia, and Florida and getting scholarship offers from all three. Cuff came to Friday Night Lights and did very well. He had a good time among all the competition.

This interview was done before word got out of an offer from the Gators and Gator Country is trying to contact Cuff to hear what he has to say about that. With my own two eyes I watched Cuff and thought he was the best cornerback of the bunch Friday night. He was among several players that were on the edge of getting an offer from Florida.

Cuff really enjoyed it and felt natural out there on Florida Field.

“I did pretty well and I think I did my best out there,” Vance Cuff said. “I always liked playing under the lights on Friday night. I liked the Swamp and felt like I played good inside the Swamp.”

“I talked to Coach Heater and he told me to call him,” he said. “They wanted me to get home and then call when I get a chance. I will call them some time soon.”

Cuff really liked what Defensive Back’s Coach Chuck Heater brings to teaching the cornerback position. It was a natural fit for Cuff at the Florida camp.

“Coach Heater is a good coach,” he said. “I know for a fact he can make me a better player. In just that little segment we had, I felt like I got better. He worked on my footwork, change of direction, and dropping. I like how they turn and run, we do the same kind of thing in our school. I love the fact they walk the safety down and put eight in the box. It is straight up man-to-man.

Cuff loved the competition. He won most of his battles on the night and did so in impressive fashion. Most of the onlookers came away very impressed.

“There was some great competition there that night including my arch rival Israel Troupe,” Cuff said. “The toughest one to cover was that commitment to Florida (Chris Rainey) he was real quick. Greg Little tried to go inside and I knocked him off of his route and he gave up.”

One he loves going against is Troupe. Troupe had a great night too overall, but the two have been mixing it up for quite some time now.

“We have been sparring since our tenth grade year,” Cuff said. “I remember it was like 4th and 10 and I played him close and he beat me deep to win the game that year. Last year I played him close the whole game and he ended up with one catch for seven yards in the entire game.”

Recruiting fans from the schools he is interested in have to like his competitive spirit. When Cuff comes to the field, the chin strap needs to be buckled. He just isn’t going to back down.

Stay tuned as we expect this one to develop to another level very quickly.
