Let the FHSAA playoffs begin

The prep football playoffs are here in the state of Florida. In a little over a month, eight champions will be crowned at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.

The following is a look at each class and where some of the top recruits will be playing. We will update this each week to give you a look at where some of the best prospects in the state will be playing and what individual matchups will be ones to keep an eye on.

CLASS 6A

For the second time this season, many eyes will focus on a matchup between Seminole (Sanford) and DeLand. Earlier this season, Seminole knocked off the Bulldogs 21-6 and with Andre Debose, Ray Ray Armstrong and Dyron Dye in the mix, it should be favored once again.

The Bulldogs broke a 13-game overall losing streak and began to pound Florida commit Mike Gillislee, as the season went on. Gillislee (6-0, 190) scored on a 1-yard run in the 6A-1 tiebreaker against Jacksonville Mandarin to lead DeLand to a 7-0 victory. From there, the Bulldogs fell to Port Orange Spruce Creek, coached by former Florida defensive tackle Tommy Moody, in the tiebreaker quarter for the 6A-1 district title.

Before Gillislee and company’s late-season surge, the last time DeLand made the regional playoffs was in 2006 when it was pounded by eventual 6A runner-up Lake Brantley (Altamonte Springs). The Bulldogs last won a playoff game in 1998 when they knocked off Orlando Evans in the first round.

Seminole, meanwhile, is back in the postseason for the first time since 2004. The Seminoles last won a playoff game in 2000. The Seminole-DeLand winner will get the winner between Spruce Creek (Port Orange) and Lake Brantley (Altamonte Springs). Spruce Creek has won two games in each of its last two playoff appearances, including a first-round victory last season over Lake Brantley.

Aside from Gillislee, another excellent running back resides in Region 1 at East Ridge (Clermont). Jeremy Wright gained over 2,000 yards during the regular season. Wright and the Knights host Winter Park to start the postseason. The Knights are 0-3 in the playoffs since being moved from Class 4A to 6A after the 2004 season.

The winner of the East Ridge/Winter Park game will get the winner of Apopka and Timber Creek. The Blue Darters fell to East Ridge, therefore, landing in the district runner-up spot for District 4.

Apopka, which is led by junior defensive back Lo Wood, reached the Class 6A state semis last season and hasn’t lost a first-round playoff game since 2003. Timber Creek has met Apopka in the opening round the past two seasons and has come up short both times. The Blue Darters picked up a 30-22 victory last season.

In Region 2, Royal Palm Beach, paced by junior wide receiver Chris Dunkley, hosts Palm Beach Lakes. Royal Palm Beach is 1-3 all-time in the playoffs, with a loss to Palm Beach Lakes in 2005. The winner will face the survivor between Park Vista and Vero Beach, which features Notre Dame commit Zeke Motta, who had been offered by Florida during the recruiting process.

Also in Region 2, Orlando Dr. Phillips hosts Plant City Durant, Sarasota Riverview travels to face Orlando Boone. Dr. Phillips, paced by juniors Ricardo Miller and Kenny Shaw, has won its last two opening-round contests, while Durant hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2003 regional finals. Meanwhile, Boone, last year’s 6A state runner-up, has won seven playoff games over the past two seasons, while Riverview has been knocked out in the first round in each of the past two seasons.

The Deerfield Beach-Plantation matchup highlights Region 3. The Bucks are led by quarterback Denard Robinson, one of the top athletic signal-callers in the state, while Plantation is paced by wide receiver Josh Robinson, who is slated to make an official visit this weekend for Florida’s game against The Citadel.

Last season, Deerfield Beach, which also features junior back Cassius McDowell, reached the Class 6A state semis and gave eventual champion Miami Northwestern a close call before falling 19-14.

The winner of the Deerfield/Plantation game gets the winner between Boyd Anderson (Lauderdale Lakes) and Taravella (Coral Springs). Boyd Anderson is paced by defensive back Demar Dorsey, one of four Florida commits for the Class of 2010. This is a rematch of a 2006 first-round game won by Boyd Anderson. Also, watch for Miami Carol City, the District 12 winner, which hosts Miramar in the opening round.

In Region 4, a super heavyweight battle will take place as undefeated No. 2 Miami Columbus (10-0) hosts two-time defending state champion Miami Northwestern (9-1). The Bulls lost to Miami Central late in the season and will now have to go on the road in order to make a return trip to Orlando.

Columbus is led by defensive tackle Antwan Lowery, who has narrowed his final three choices down to Florida, Miami and Rutgers. Last season, Lowery and Columbus were blown out 40-14 in the second round by Northwestern.

The Bulls, who feature juniors Corvin Lamb (TB) and Torrian Wilson (OT), should once again provide a tough test. Northwestern has won its last seven playoff openers, with its last defeat in the first round coming to Miami High in 2000.

Miami Central, the team which knocked off Miami Northwestern to claim the District 13 title, hosts Coral Gables. The Rockets feature two top juniors in quarterback Jeffery Godfrey and tailback Brandon Gainer.

Also in Region 4, Miami Palmetto and senior tailback Jamal Berry (an Ohio State commit) visits Southwest Miami. If Berry has a big game, Palmetto could pick up its first playoff win since 1999.

CLASS 5A

The smart money is on defending Class 5A state champion St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) and Lakeland to once again meet in the title game, but teams like last year’s 5A runner-up Kissimmee Osceola, Pine Forest (Pensacola), Mainland (Daytona Beach), Venice, Largo and Tampa Chamberlin will try to make some noise in what may be the best classification in the state.

In Region 1, Pine Forest, which moved up to Class 5A after finishing as the Class 3A state runner-up in 2006, hosts Ed White (Jacksonville). Pine Forest’s district foe, Niceville, visits unbeaten Neptune Beach Fletcher.

Niceville hasn’t missed the playoffs since 2000 and defeated Fletcher 30-13 in last year’s opening round. Junior tailback Roy Finch leads Niceville, while senior wide receiver Lamar Scruggs paces Fletcher.

Also in Region 1, undefeated Mainland hosts Gainesville Buchholz for the second straight season in the opening round. The Bucs haven’t missed the playoffs since 1993, while Buchholz has lost five straight opening-round playoff contests.

Orange Park, which won one game last season, has turned things around under first-year coach Danny Green, who has led both Haines City and Columbia (Lake City) to the state title game. The Raiders, who haven’t won a playoff game since 1992, host first-time playoff qualifier Pine Ridge (Deltona).

Region 2 features unbeaten Lakeland, which hosts Bloomingdale. The Dreadnaughts, paced by junior quarterback Jarred Higgins, haven’t lost a first-round playoff game since 2002. A possible rematch from week 10 with Osceola looms, should the Kowboys get past Tampa Newsome.

Also in Region 2, Tampa Wharton hosts Tampa Alfonso and Tampa Chamberlin hosts Tampa Gaither and tailback Jarvis Giles.

Class of 2010 Florida commit Trey Burton highlights the Region 3 action. The junior signalcaller leads Venice against Cape Coral, a team it lost to 27-10 in last year’s opening round in Cape Coral. This year’s game is in Venice.

Other Region 3 games include: St. Petersburg visiting Dunedin, Clearwater Countryside visiting Largo and Charlotte (Punta Gorda) visiting Fort Myers. A year ago, Largo advanced to the state semifinals, where it met up with St. Thomas Aquinas, the beast of Region 4.

Aquinas has players like tailback Gio Bernard (5-9, 190), safety Brain Robinson (6-0, 175) and offensive lineman Brandon Linder (6-5, 275) on Florida’s watch list. The Raiders host to Coconut Creek to start the playoffs.

Other Region 4 games include: Stuart South Fork visiting Melbourne Palm Bay, Bayside visiting Delray Beach Atlantic and Hollywood McArthur visiting Fort Lauderdale Dillard.

CLASS 4A

Over the past three seasons, Nease (Ponte Vedra Beach) has represented the northern half of the 4A bracket in the state title game, but the Panthers will have to do much of their run on the road if they want to get back.

Nease visits Gainesville Eastside, a team it has defeated twice in the postseason over the past three seasons. The team that knocked off Nease for the district title, Orange Park Ridgeview, looks to win its first playoff game in five tries when it hosts first-time playoff qualifier Lake Weir.

The rest of Region 2 also features Merritt Island hosting Tarpon Springs, losers of seven straight first-round playoff games, and Daytona Beach Seabreeze visiting Land O’Lakes, losers of four straight games in the first round.

In Region 1, Pensacola Pace hosts Crestview, Fort Walton Beach hosts Tate, Tallahassee Lincoln hosts Jacksonville Robert E. Lee and Jacksonville First Coast hosts Tallahassee Leon.

Pace, losers in last year’s state semifinals to Nease in triple-overtime, hasn’t lost a first-round playoff game since 2003. Crestview, meanwhile, hasn’t won a game since the 2002 state semifinals. Fort Walton Beach and Tate have combined for just two playoff appearances.

Lincoln, which features senior safety Jawanza Starling, hasn’t missed the playoff since 1995 and will look to extend Lee’s streak of first-round playoff losses to six games. First Coast, meanwhile, will look to knock off Leon for the second straight year in the first round.

The southern half of the bracket features Seffner Armwood, Tampa Plant, Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens) and defending Class 4A state champion Booker T. Washington (Miami).

Washington opens with Naples Gulf Coast, a team it drubbed 49-0 last year in the opening road. The Tornadoes have an impressive junior class paced by defensive end Lynden Trail (6-7, 220), who has been offered by Florida. Also watch for Washington offensive lineman Jose Jose (6-3, 320) and tailback Eduardo Clements (5-11, 190).

Washington has reached the state semifinals on five straight occasions and a potential super heavyweight battle looms in the state semifinals against Dwyer, which features Florida commit Matt Elam (6-0, 202), a standout junior safety, and tight end Gerald Christian (6-3, 220).

Dwyer, which has been in the playoffs every year since 1999, opens with Okeechobee, a team it handled 30-17 in the opening round. Other Region 4 games include Boca Raton at Fort Pierce Westwood and Naples Barron Collier at Hallandale.

In Region 3, Armwood and Plant appear to once again be on a collision course to meet in the regional finals. Armwood features seniors Ryne Giddins (DE) and Angelo Hadley (S), both of whom have drawn lots of interest from Florida.

Plant is paced by senior tight end Orson Charles, but the team will be without quarterback Aaron Murray, a Georgia commit, due to a knee injury. The Panthers open with St. Petersburg, while Winter Haven travels to face Armwood.

CLASS 3A

A year ago, Naples knocked off St. Augustine to claim the Class 3A state title in a game that Florida commit Nick Alajajian called the toughest game he’s ever played in.

Alajajian (6-4, 280) has returned from an early-season injury and the Golden Eagles are hoping to claim back-to-back titles. Naples opens up with Fort Myers Riverdale, a team it blasted 42-7 in the opening round back in 2006.

The road for Naples to get back to the state finals won’t be easy, as it has Miami Monsignor Pace and Belle Glade Glades Central lurking in Region 4. Pace, which knocked off Naples 24-23 without Alajajian in the season opener for both, hosts Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons to start the playoffs.

Pace hasn’t missed the postseason since 1990 and has won two of three meetings with the Redskins, including a shutout victory in last year’s opening round. Glades Central opens with Belen Jesuit, a team it has defeated in the opening round in each of the past two seasons. Last season, Glades Central fell to Naples in the regional finals.

As for St. Augustine, it compiled a perfect 10-0 record under coach Joey Wiles and opens against Glen St. Mary Baker County, a team it downed 30-6 in last year’s regional semifinals. St. Augustine has won 14 playoff games over the past four seasons and has played for the Class 3A state title on three occasions this decade.

The winner between St. Augustine/Baker County gets the winner between Jacksonville Andrew Jackson and St. Augustine Menendez. Jackson has made the playoffs in five of the last six seasons, while the Falcons are in the postseason for the first time in school history.

The rest of Region 1 features Crawfordville Wakulla visiting Panama City Arnold and Tallahassee Godby hosting Pensacola High in opening-round rematches. Last season, Arnold and Godby claimed first-round victories. This is the third meeting between Godby and Pensacola, with Godby winning two of the previous meetings. Wakulla, which has lost three straight first-round games, is the only team to lose to Arnold in its four playoff games.

Over the past three seasons, North Marion has claimed the Region 2 title but has come up short in the state semifinals each time. The Colts haven’t missed the playoffs since 1999 and meet Crystal River, a team it has knocked off twice in the postseason since 2003. A meeting with the winner between Nature Coast and Williston looms for the Colts/Pirates winner.

Williston, which is in the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season, defeated Nature Coast in the opening round of the 2006 playoffs. The Sharks, paced by junior tailback Tevin Drake, have lost both playoff games in school history.

The rest of Region 2 features four teams that haven’t done much of late in the playoffs. New Port Richey Gulf, which has never won a postseason game, meets a St. Cloud team that hasn’t won a playoff game since 1980. Gulf, though, has some excellent juniors in 2,000 yard-rusher Adrian “Bubba,” Golden and Leon Orr (6-5, 290), a tight end in high school but an offensive tackle at the next level.

The winner gets either Dade City Pasco or Orlando Bishop Moore. Pasco won the Class 3A state title in 1992 but hasn’t claimed a playoff win since 1998. The Hornets, meanwhile, have won just one playoff game since 1976.

In Region 3, Cocoa and Palmetto appear to be headed for a showdown. Cocoa, which lost to Naples in the state semifinals last season, opens with Lake Wales. The Tigers knocked off Lake Wales in last year’s second round.

Palmetto appears to be a team of destiny and is paced by senior defensive end Kedric Johnson, a Florida commit. Johnson and Co. open with first-time playoff qualifier Braden River and are looking to win multiple games in the playoffs for the first time since 1986.

Ridge Community and Space Coast, also first-time playoff qualifiers, meet in another Region 3 battle, while another first-time qualifier, Tampa Spoto, pays a visit to Arcadia to play DeSoto County, which hasn’t won a playoff game since 1998.

CLASS 2A

The state champion for this classification should come out of the North with defending champion and nationally ranked Madison County along with Jacksonville Bolles and South Sumter (Bushnell) doing battle. Of course, Fort White, which is coached by former Gator Demetric Jackson, is also a program on the upswing.

Fort White visits Pensacola Catholic, a team it defeated 36-34 last season in the opening round for its only postseason win in school history. From there, the winner between Madison County and Marianna looms. Madison has won 12 consecutive first-round playoff matchups since 1995 and has knocked off Marianna the last two times they have met in the postseason.

The last playoff victory for Marianna came in 2000 when it knocked off South Sumter in the regional finals. Along the way, Marianna also knocked off Bolles and South Sumter, so it is possible to knock off the “Triangle Terror” in Class 2A and get to the state finals.

Bolles, one of the state’s top programs, opens with Orlando Jones, a team which hasn’t won a playoff game since 1995 and is back in the postseason for the first time since 1997. Bolles is paced by junior offensive tackle Brent Benedict (6-5, 275), who holds an offer from Florida.

Benedict and company should be favored, as Bolles hasn’t lost a first-round playoff game since 1989. From there, a likely matchup against South Sumter looms. South Sumter hosts Jacksonville Ribault, a team that has won a playoff game since 1994. The Raiders, on the other hand, have won six postseason contests since bowing out in the first round to Alachua Santa Fe in 2004.

Last season, Tampa Catholic made it to the state title game and is once again led by athletic quarterback Christian Green who has also been offered by Florida. The Crusaders host Inlet Grove, a team it knocked off last season in the first round.

Massive two-way junior lineman Chaz Green (6-6, 275) has battled injuries for Tampa Catholic. But if he is healthy, he is certainly one to watch. A win over Inlet Grove and Tampa Catholic will face the winner of the Mulberry/Clewiston matchup.

A year ago, Tampa Catholic snapped a four-game losing streak to Clewiston with a win in the regional finals. The matchup appears likely once again as Mulberry hasn’t claimed a playoff victory since 1984 and Inlet Grove has only played one postseason game in its history.

American Heritage (Plantation), which features senior offensive lineman Jared Wheeler (6-4, 310) who at one time was on Florida’s board, visits an Archbishop Carroll squad it has split with the past two seasons in the playoffs. The winner gets the victor between Miami Gulliver Prep, which features linebacker Frankie Telfort, and unbeaten North Broward. Junior quarterback Brandon Doughty leads the way for NBP.

CLASS 2B

Think of last year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament where the top four seeds reached the Final Four and you will have the same thing in the Class 2B football playoffs. Two-time defending state champion Pahokee, Ocala Trinity Catholic, Tallahassee Florida High and Frostproof are the favorites to make the state semifinals. From there, most expect to see Pahokee, who have played in the state finals each season since Class 2B started in 2003, against Trinity Catholic.

Led by Florida commit Nu’Keese Richardson, Pahokee has an abundance of talent and won’t be challenged (if then) until the state semifinals. In its last two playoff openers, the Blue Devils have outscored their opponents, 134-0. Pahokee’s first-round opponent Miramar Parkway has made the playoffs just once and fell to Pahokee in its only trip back in 2005.

A win by Pahokee and it gets to take on the victor between King’s Academy and University School, The Blue Devils have handled with ease in the past. A year ago, Pahokee drubbed University School, 62-0, to start its trek to its second consecutive state title.

On a collision course with Pahokee appears to be Frostproof, which features junior athlete Nickell Robey (5-9, 162). Frostproof, which lost to Pahokee in last year’s state semis, hadn’t won a playoff game since 1999, before its run in 2007. The Bulldogs open the playoffs against Winter Park Trinity Prep, which hasn’t won a playoff game since 1977 and has dropped five straight since.

Perhaps the only team in Region 3 that can throw a wrench into the Pahokee-Frostproof matchup in the South is Wildwood (9-1). The Wildcats, though, haven’t won a playoff game since 1999 and their district hasn’t matched up well against the private schools from the Tampa/Sarasota area.

Cardinal Mooney, back in the playoffs after a year absence, visits Wildwood and is hoping for a run similar to 2006, when it made the state semifinals.

In the north, Florida High, state semifinalists a year ago, host Baker High, which is looking for its first playoff win since 2001. The Seminoles had lost four in a row in the playoffs, until last year’s run to the state semis, where they lost to Newberry.

Speaking of the Panthers, they will take on Jacksonville Trinity Christian for the third consecutive season in the regional semifinals. The teams split the first two matchups, with Newberry rolling to the win a year ago, its first in the playoffs since 1998.

Trinity Christian, which hasn’t missed the playoffs since 1994, would host the regional finals with a win for the first time since 2006. The last time the Conquerors did, though, current University of Florida backup quarterback John Brantley led Trinity Catholic to an easy victory. The Celtics, who knocked off Pahokee in the 2005 2B title game, are looking for their third meeting in four seasons for the title against the Blue Devils.

Trinity Catholic features junior wide receiver Kadron Boone (6-0, 192), who has already been offered by Florida. The Celtics (9-1) meet Jacksonville Episcopal for the second year in a row in the first round and are looking for their five straight win in a playoff opener.

Episcopal, which has never won a playoff game, has played several larger schools, but the high-powered offense of the Celtics will probably be too much for them to handle.

The other opener in the north features Bozeman against South Walton, both of which have never won a playoff game.

As things look now, it appears the race to the 2B title is pretty set, but you never know and a huge upset could change things. Then again, the smart money is on another Pahokee-Trinity Catholic state final.

CLASS 1A

A super heavyweight game featuring two of the top senior prospects in the state could take place in the regional finals, but both Mayo Lafayette and West Gadsden must take care of business right off the bat.

Lafayette features senior wide receiver/defensive back Jamal Reid, a Miami commit, who some feel would decommit and become a Florida Gator if offered. Reid and the undefeated Hornets host Port St. Joe, a team they have met three consecutive times in the playoffs, including twice in the first round.

Port St. Joe has won two of the three meetings, but Lafayette claimed a regional final triumph last season. The winner gets the winner of the Hilliard-West Gadsden contest.

West Gadsden is paced by Florida commit Gary Brown (6-4, 275), who hopes to lead the school to its first-ever playoff victory. The only other time that West Gadsden made the playoffs before, it lost to Hilliard in 2004, but don’t expect a repeat of that this time around.

Most expect the winner of Region 2 to be perennial state power Tallahassee North Florida Christian, which has been Class 1A’s state runner-up the past two seasons. The Eagles host Melbourne Holy Trinity, which is 0-5 all-time in the postseason, in the regional semis.

Orlando First Academy and Jacksonville University Christian will then meet in a regional-semi rematch from last year, won by First Academy.

In the southern half of the bracket, top-ranked Fort Meade hosts Fort Myers Evangelical Christian, a team it is 5-0 against all-time in the playoffs. The Miners haven’t lost a first-round playoff game since 1995 and are paced by Jimmy Office, one of the top sleeper prospects in the state for 2010.

Look for Fort Meade to do battle with Glades Day, which hosts Indian Rocks Christian, a team it has won two consecutive playoff games with.

Finally, defending Class 1A state champion American Heritage (Delray Beach) hosts a Palmer Trinity team that hasn’t won a playoff game since 1977 and hasn’t qualified since 1980. American Heritage has won five of its last six playoff games overall.

American Heritage should advance and face the winner between Calvary Christian and Dade Christian. Calvary is 3-2 all-time in the postseason, while Dade is on a current four-game playoff losing skid.

CLASS 1B

Last season, Jupiter Christian shocked Tallahassee FAMU to win its first state championship and with lots of newcomers to playoffs in this class, a rematch could be in order.

The Baby Rattlers start the playoffs against Jacksonville Arlington Country Day, a team it knocked off in the opening round 35-7 in 2007. Arlington Country Day, one of the state’s premier basketball programs, has lost three straight games on the gridiron in the postseason since 2001.

FAMU will get the winner between its district rival Graceville and Jacksonville Eagle’s View. A year ago, Graceville rolled to a 58-34 to set up a rematch against FAMU in the regional finals.

In Region 2, Warner Christian hosts Merritt Island Christian and Deltona Trinity Christian visits Maitland Orangewood Christian. Warner, which has qualified for the playoffs on six consecutive occasions, takes on a Merritt Island Christian team that has played just one postseason game in its history. Trinity Christian, meanwhile, has made it four straight times to the playoffs, while Orangewood lost the only playoff game in school history.

The southern half of the bracket could feature a matchup between Lakeland Victory Christian and Jupiter Christian in the state semifinals, but each school has to navigate through the first two rounds.

Victory Christian, the 2006 state runner-up, hosts first-time playoff school Out-of-Door, while Jupiter Christian hosts Hollywood Christian, a program that hasn’t missed the playoffs since 1997, but has only won two playoff games this decade.

Other games in the south include: Keswick Christian visiting Pine Castle Christian and Sheridan Hills hosting Upperroom Christian. The most intriguing player in this half of the bracket is Sheridan Hills’ junior offensive tackle David Delosin (6-5, 305).

Neither Sheridan Hills nor Upperroom has ever won a playoff game, while Pine Castle drubbed Keswick Christian, 32-13 in the opening round two years ago.
