Florida Gators working to get back in with Dixon

The Florida Gators hosted several of the nation’s top cornerbacks for Friday Night Lights, including 2019 prospect John Dixon (6-0, 170, Tampa, FL. Chamberlain).

Dixon is no stranger to Florida as he made multiple visits during the Jim McElwain era, but this was his first time on campus since Dan Mullen and his staff took over.

“The visit was nice,” he said. “I liked meeting the new coaches. This is my first time getting to see them.”

He is injured right now, so he could not workout at the event. But Florida is showing interest and cornerbacks coach Charlton Warren likes what he’s seen of Dixon’s playing style and wants to see more once his high school season starts.

“They wanted to get to know me,” Dixon said. “Mainly Coach Warren. He wants me to get healthy and then he’s gonna come and see me play.”

Florida made it into Dixon’s top schools under the previous staff last year, but fell out of his Top Five back in May to Alabama, Penn State, Ohio State, Miami and South Carolina. He has openly said he would like to get out of state, but the Gators still hold a special place in his heart as he grew up a fan.

With Florida’s interest in him heating back up, it could find its way back into the mix.

“I think it could affect it,” Dixon said. “Simply because it [Florida] is a big part of my past.”

After his visit on Friday, Dixon announced that he plans to set up one of his official visits to Florida for a game in the fall, which is a sign that things may be looking up for the Gators.

No matter what he ultimately decides, Dixon has one main thing that he is looking for in a school.

“I just want to find a second home and be comfortable wherever I pick to play.”

Bailiegh Carlton
A lifelong sports fan, Bailiegh Carlton knew from a young age that she wanted to work in sports in some capacity. Before transferring to the University of Florida to study journalism, she played softball at Gulf Coast State College. She then interned for Gator Country for three years as she worked toward her degree. After graduation, Bailiegh decided to explore other opportunities in the world of sports, but all roads led her right back here. In her time away, she and her husband welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world. When she isn't working, she can almost always be found snuggled up with sweet baby Ridley, Cody and her four fur babies.
