Bill Koss to be Honored as a SEC Legend

He may have averaged only 2.8 points per game during his playing career at the University of Florida, but Bill Koss has been anything but forgotten since suiting up for the Gators from 1963-65.

Koss’ legacy was forever cemented in Gainesville when he was inducted into the UF Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008, and now, the Southeastern Conference will take its turn in honoring Koss when he is officially announced as an Allstate SEC Basketball Legend during the SEC tournament in Nashville from March 13-17.

Not long after his playing days had officially come to a close, Koss returned to the Gators basketball program, but this time in coaching capacity, as he would serve as a Florida assistant for six years.

With a passion for the game still present after his coaching days, Koss went to work as color-commentator for the Gators, where according to FoxSportsFlorida.com, he broadcasted over 350 games on the radio from 1973-1989.

Koss has continued to call Gators’ games for both Fox Sports Florida and Sun Sports for nearly two decades. In addition to his role as a broadcaster and radio personality, Koss also added the title of author to his resume, as a penned a book entitled “Pond Birds: Gator Basketball: The Whole Story from the Inside.”

Koss is one of 14 former greats who will be honored during the tournament. The rest of the 2013 class includes:  Wimp Sanderson, Alabama; Jerry Carlton, Arkansas; Ronnie Battle, Auburn; Tim Bassett, Georgia; Jamal Mashburn, Kentucky; Geert Hammink, LSU; Rahim Lockhart, Ole Miss; Horatio Webster, Mississippi State; Norm Stewart, Missouri; Eddie Fogler, South Carolina; Len Kosmalski, Tennessee; John Beasley, Texas A&M; Mike Rhoades, Vanderbilt.

Upon finishing at the University of Florida, Alex realized his passion for writing and sought a way to combine that passion with his love of sports, thus bringing him to GC. In his spare moments, Alex enjoys spending quality time with his DVR, and is on a current quest to break 120 on the golf course.
