“National Championship or Bust”: Thomas Haugh Embraces Expectations for Florida’s 2026-27 Season

Thomas Haugh didn’t mince words when asked about expectations for Florida’s loaded 2026 roster.

“It’s national championship or bust for this team,” Haugh said during Tuesday’s media availability. “That’s my mindset. I think that’s our whole team’s mindset.”

The expectations are rooted in experience, talent and confidence.

Haugh passed on the NBA Draft, where he projected as a potential lottery pick, to return for his senior season. He’ll play alongside 2026 Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Rueben Chinyelu and two-time All-SEC selection Alex Condon, who also had opportunities to pursue professional careers.

With lofty standards come pressure, but that’s nothing new for Todd Golden’s Gators, who claimed the program’s third national championship in 2024-25 and earned back-to-back No. 1 seeds over the last two seasons.

“I think this year we have the pressure, obviously. We’re probably gonna be top three (preseason). I think last year we had the pressure of the national championship on our back, but I think we have the same thing this year again.”

“We’re mature enough,” Haugh said. “We have a really old group now to know that. So I think we’re going to be really comfortable coming into the season.”

Florida’s 2025-26 season came to a heartbreaking end at Benchmark International Arena, where the Gators were stunned by No. 9 seed Iowa, 73-72.

The loss left a lasting impression on Haugh and ultimately helped shape his decision to return for his senior season.

“Last year our team deserved to go further,” Haugh said. “We had the squad to do it, the coaching staff to do it. It’s basketball. It’s March Madness. It’s why it’s called March Madness. We were on the positive side the year before, we get the negative side of it then.”

After a relaxing vacation in Hawaii and announcing his decision to return to Florida, Haugh turned his attention to improving his game. The 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward spent time training in Los Angeles, where he focused on becoming more comfortable on the perimeter and improving his three-point shot.

“The main thing is expanding my game more,” Haugh said. “Last year I was able to score the ball a little bit better than I was the last couple years, but now it’s just being more comfortable in the three. That was my first year playing the three, so I was comfortable, but it wasn’t like I’ve been doing this my whole life. This year, having that under my belt, I should be more experienced out there on the perimeter. Being able to hit people, make some more assists out there on the corner, and also knock down more shots. I think towards the end of the year I started shooting a little bit worse, so I think to just stay consistent throughout the entire year.”

Haugh wasn’t alone in California. He was joined by teammate and best friend Alex Condon, and numerous NBA players including Patrick Williams, Stephon Castle, and Klay Thompson.

“I did it all of last year and I saw my game improve so much offensively, off the bounce,” Haugh said on working out with NBA players. “Being able to go out there and do that again with those guys. Surrounding yourself with that just makes the competition go so high and makes you as a player get so much better.”

The New Oxford, Pa., native is coming off an All-American season in which he averaged 17.1 points per game, but there’s always room for improvement in the eyes of the Gators’ star. Haugh focused on developing his left hand this offseason to become a more versatile scorer in 2026-27.

“I was out there working with the heavy ball left hand stuff,” Haugh said. ” We were out there every day. It was me, Pat Williams, and all them. We were trying to only finish with the left hand; it was like a weighted ball. Adding that to my game and making teams respect that I can go left just as good as I can go right is huge too this year.”

With an experienced roster returning, championship expectations in Gainesville, and another offseason spent refining his game, Haugh enters his senior season determined to make the most of one final opportunity in orange and blue.
