Kevin O’Sullivan named Skip Bertman Award Winner

Florida Gators head baseball coach Kevin O’Sullivan was named the Skip Bertman National Coach of the Year on Wednesday.

O’Sullivan was previously named the National Coach of the Year by D1baseball.com and Collegiate Baseball. This marks the second time O’Sullivan, who just completed his 10th season at Florida, has been named National Coach of the Year. He was first awarded the honor in 2011 by Baseball America.

“Kevin O’Sullivan’s club showed both heart and perseverance in bringing the school its first national championship,” said Mike Gustafson, president and CEO of the National College Baseball Hall of Fame and chair of the Bertman Award committee. “We’re honored to present this award to coach O’Sullivan for this tremendous accomplishment.”

Florida finished 52-19 on its way to the school’s first National Championship. It was the third straight 50-win season for O’Sullivan’s Gators and the fourth under his tenure.

A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
