Ernesto Lugo-Canchola’s reaction said it all — the fire of a pitcher who had just retired 17 straight to begin his Gators career.
The 6’5, 235-pound left-hander has delivered 5.2 perfect innings out of the bullpen across two appearances this season. He was instrumental in Florida’s 9–3 win over Stetson on Wednesday night, striking out five over three dominant innings of relief.
After being lifted in the eighth with the game in hand, Lugo-Canchola calmly walked toward the Gators’ dugout before erupting with emotion as he crossed the first-base line, urging the Gator faithful to get loud and embracing his teammates.
It was a moment that perfectly captured his passion, competitiveness, and desire.
“He’s got the heart of a lion,” head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said on Lugo-Canchola.
Lugo-Canchola’s journey to UF is unlike most. The Pleasant Grove, Utah, native began his career at Salt Lake Community College and the University of Utah before transferring to Division II Northwest Nazarene in 2025. In his lone season there, Lugo-Canchola earned DII Baseball Pitcher of the Year honors and was named a DII First Team All-American by D2 Baseball and the NCBWA.
He posted a perfect 13–0 record across 16 starts, compiling a 2.00 ERA, a .164 batting average against, and 103 strikeouts to 44 walks over 94 2/3 innings.
“I think it’s a great story,” O’Sullivan said. “Here’s a guy that came all the way across the country, pitched division two last year, just goes to show you when you got good stuff there’s no question about it. He’s extremely competitive.”
After being out of high school baseball for five seasons, Lugo-Canchola struggled to secure an extra year of eligibility. The left-hander was set to begin his professional career in an independent league before receiving good news — and a call from the Florida Gators.
“I hopped in the portal right away, was denied multiple times,” Lugo-Canchola said. “A month later I was told I had another year to play, and actually [David] Kopp called me and I had an amazing phone call with Sully [Kevin O’Sullivan] and I was all in after that phone call.”
Lugo-Canchola’s commitment to Florida came without hesitation, even before seeing the campus. Soon after, he made the three-day drive from Utah with his grandparents, who hail from Guanajuato, Mexico.
“I’d never been to Gainesville before. I made the three-day trip to come here to be a Gator. Best decision I ever made,” Lugo-Canchola said. “I brought my grandparents. They don’t get to explore much in the States, so being able to do that with them is something I’ll never forget.”
“Just extremely grateful,” Lugo-Canchola added. “I did a lot of reflecting, had a lot of time to reflect, just realizing that everything happens for a reason. You put your head down, you move the right way, a lot of good things will happen in your life.”
Moving from Division II to the SEC is a big jump, but Lugo-Canchola isn’t shying away from the level of competition. He knows the SEC isn’t forgiving, but he sees it as the perfect opportunity to push himself and grow.
“How else am I gonna get better if I don’t put myself in that environment to see if I’m made for it or not,” Lugo-Canchola said. “Coming into this environment, it can go two ways, you can let it eat you up or you can embrace it. Just dealing with it in the beginning is kind of like ‘wow this is the best talent I’ve ever seen’, and kind of embrace it. You become who you surround yourself with, and I’m surrounded by superstars.”
Florida was in need of a veteran presence, having fielded the youngest pitching staff in the SEC over the last two seasons. Lugo-Canchola brings exactly that, with a contagious energy both on and off the mound.
“I would say I’m two-faced when I get between those lines,” Lugo-Canchola said. “I’m gonna go do my job. I got to throw strikes, I got to stay focused, I can’t let up. There’s a time and a place to have fun; as soon as I’m done, I’m all laughter.”
No.12 Florida is now 4-1 with Lugo-Canchola leading the Gators’ bullpen in two victories.
“It means the world to me,” Lugo-Canchola said. “This is my 6th year; I got an awesome opportunity. Sully brought me in and you know a lot of people dream of representing this logo, and when I get an opportunity and have a night that I had, it’s all positive vibes, and with the guys I’m surrounded with it’s just a lot of fun.”
Lugo-Canchola commands the zone with three pitches and generates swings and misses with his slider. He’ll be relied upon in high-leverage innings as the top left-hander on Florida’s staff.
The Gators are set to take on Kennesaw State in a three-game series starting on Friday, February 20th.
