Headed Home

HOOVER, AL — Florida’s slide against Arkansas continued Friday afternoon at Regions Park. The Razorbacks made it five in a row this season against the Gators, beating UF 10-7 in the SEC Baseball Tournament.

The Razorbacks swept the Gators in a three-game series to start conference play in mid-March and they continued their dominance in the SEC Tournament, putting the Gators in the loser’s bracket on Wednesday with an 8-5 first round win in the SEC Tournament. Of the five losses to Arkansas, Friday’s might have been the worst of them all.

What added insult to injury for Florida was that Arkansas started a lineup that featured seven freshman. Starting shortstop Scott Lyons and second baseman Ben Tschepikow both missed the game with injuries.

“Some guys had to double take when they saw the lineup today when I posted it with all those young kids in there,” Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn said. “They’ve grown up over the season. We thought we could win with them.”

The Gators were unable to keep Arkansas off the scoreboard after scoring runs of their own. All seven of Florida’s runs came in two innings, the fourth and seventh. In the bottom half of those two innings, Arkansas scored seven runs, including a five-run inning in the fourth.

“The bottom line is the game came down to we couldn’t stop them when we scored,” Florida head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “Once again, the big inning hurt us. We could never quite gain the momentum. As soon as we got the momentum, we just lost it in the bottom half.”

The Gators took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning on a bases loaded single from Brandon McArthur that got under the glove of center fielder Collin Kuhn, plating three runs and allowing McArthur to get all the way to third.

“Today I think we swung the bats as well as we have against them,” McArthur said. “We got down and came back to take the lead and we had momentum. We couldn’t hold on to it. Our defense and pitching staff couldn’t really hold them down.”

Florida starting pitcher Nick Maronde only lasted 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and two runs, although neither was earned. The freshman left-hander only walked one batter but hit two. His control was not sharp, so O’Sullivan made a pitching change with runners on first and third in the third inning, bringing on Greg Larson to get a double play ball.

“When we got the double play ball from Larson and then put up three in the fourth, I really thought we were going to play well.”

Larson only lasted one inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Razorbacks got to Larsen for a five-run inning that gave them the lead for good. The big blow of the inning was a two-run homer by freshman third baseman Zack Cox that hit the top of the scoreboard in right field, knocking a chip out of the second “r” in the sign for Regions Park.

“Earlier in the season I came up with a positive count and didn’t get the barrel out there like I should have,” Cox said. “I told myself it wasn’t going to happen this time. Luckily I got a pitch to hit.”

The inning continued with back-to-back hits before Tony Davis relieved Larson. He gave up a double to Chase Leavitt to score one. After a walk to load the bases, Davis got Andy Wilkins to hit a ground ball to second base for what looked like a sure double play, but Mike Mooney threw the ball over Preston Tucker’s head at first base to score two runs and move the Arkansas lead to 7-3.

“That double play ball really hurt us,” O’Sullivan said. “To close out the inning we would have been down by two, but we throw the ball away and we’re down by four. That really hurt us.”

After Kuhn knocked in another run in the seventh inning with an RBI single, the Gators made a late charge.

McArthur led off with a single to right field and moved to third base on a double to left by Matt den Dekker. Two outs later Avery Barnes hit a routine ground ball to shortstop Tim Carver, whose throwing error allowed two Gators to score. Jonathan Pigott followed with a home run to left-center field, cutting to deficit to 8-7 and changing the mood in the dugout.

“We got some momentum and thought we’d get a little something going,” Pigott said. “We wanted to come back and do something with it, but we just couldn’t keep the momentum long enough.”

In Pigott’s last eight games, he is 11-32 (.344) with three home runs, 12 RBI and seven runs scored. The junior outfielder hit three home runs in this year’s SEC Tournament. He hit only two home runs in each of his freshman and sophomore seasons.

“I’m just sticking with the same approach coach helped me out with,” Pigott said. “I’m trying to square balls up and get into hitter’s counts to take advantage of it.”

The Razorbacks took two runs back in their half of the seventh inning with an RBI single from Cox and a squeeze bunt from Carver. The lead went back to 10-7 where it would stay.

Cox not only went 2-3 with 3 RBI, but he also came on to throw two perfect innings to end the game.

“He did a real nice job,” O’Sullivan said. “He’s hurt us all year. The home run was what hurt us.”

The Gators now will wait until the field for the NCAA Tournament is unveiled on Monday. Florida is considered almost a lock to host a regional, but Friday’s loss hurt their chances to attain a national seed and host a super regional.

Regardless of what the committee decides, Florida’s focus now is fully on next Friday’s regional.

“If we come out of that with two losses, that’s our season,” McArthur said. “We can’t come out flat like we kind of did today. These games are so valuable. Our goal is to go to Omaha, and we can’t sit back and let anything slip by. Two more losses and our season is over.”
