Florida Gators softball: Recapping the Gators weekend

GatorCountry.com brings you this week’s Florida Gators softball review as the Gators won five games last week. In this recap we will break down the past week’s games, plus name a player of the week from the past week.

The Gators went out to California and defeated the No. 8 ranked Washington Huskies and No. 10 ranked UCLA this past weekend. Florida in total has now defeated three top ten ranked teams this year.

Florida outscored its opponents this past weekend by a score of 19-4 and the Gators are now a perfect 16-0 this year.

The Gators have now outscored their opponents 109-8 through 16 games this season.

 

Results

  • Florida defeated No.10 UCLA 2-1- winning pitcher Delanie Gourley
  • Florida defeated North Carolina State 5-2- winning pitcher Kelly Barnhilll
  • Florida defeated No. 8 Washington 3-1- winning pitcher Delanie Gourley
  • Florida defeated Nebraska 8-0 – winning pitcher Kelly Barnhill
  • Florida defeated Utah 1-0 – winning pitcher Aleshia Ocasio

 

Offensive leaders

Senior Kelsey Stewart raised her batting average from .226 to .347 after a great weekend. Stewart hit her first triple of the season and also stole two bases to raise her on base percentage to .475. Stewart has now scored 16 runs this year from the leadoff spot.

Sophomore Janell Wheaton had an insanely good weekend by hitting two home runs against Washington on Friday night. Wheaton now has 19 RBIs, four home runs and has a slugging percentage of .738 this year. Wheaton is becoming the power hitter for this team.

Senior Taylore Fuller dropped down to the five-hole this week and she settled into the role really well. Fuller drove in four runs and now has an on-base percentage of .536 this year.

Pitching

Tim Walton and Florida Gators softball pitching coach Jennifer Rocha threw all three of the Gators pitchers this past weekend. Junior Delanie Gourley picked up two more wins this week and also picked up a save against Utah on Saturday. Gourley gave up her first run of the season in California, but still has a 0.24 ERA. The lefty is 6-0 this year and opponents are hitting just .141 against here.

Sophomore Aleshia Ocasio struggled a little bit this past weekend, but still picked up the win against Utah. Ocasio had her ERA move up just a little bit to 0.94 on the year and is 5-0.

Freshman Kelly Barnhill dominated the weekend in the circle as she had 22 strikeouts in two games. Barnhill struck out 14 North Carolina State hitters over seven innings. In total this weekend Barnhill was 2-0 and gave up two runs in 12 innings of work. She now has 42 strikeouts and is 5-0 with a 0.94 ERA.

 

Player of the week

Sophomore Janell Wheaton has to get this award, as she was the Gators leading hitter in California. Wheaton hit two home runs and drove in six runs with nine hits.

This weekend the Gators are back home for the Aquafina Invitational from Thursday to Sunday in Gainesville.

Andrew always knew he wanted to be involved with sports in some capacity. He began by coaching high school football for six years before deciding to pursue a career in journalism. While coaching, he was a part of two state semifinal teams in the state of Alabama. Given his past coaching experience, he figured covering recruiting would be a perfect fit.
