Florida Gators place two on All-American teams

Florida Gators juniors Logan Shore and Pete Alonso were both All-Americans by Baseball America on Tuesday. Shore was a First Team selection, while Alonso was a Third Team pick.

Shore has had quite the junior season, compiling an 11-0 record and a 2.44 ERA. Shore was named the SEC Pitcher of the Year in a season where he set a school record with 16 consecutive winning decisions, a streak he will look to add on to this weekend in a Super Regional.

Alonso was red hot last year in the College World Series and carried that momentum into the 2016 season. Alonso leads the Gators in batting average (.368), home runs (12), RBI (55), total bases (122), slugging (.632) and on base percentages (.464). He’s also second on the team with 46 runs, 71 hits and 14 doubles. Shore was named a Freshman All-American by Baseball America in 2014.

Alonso missed 27 days after a Jordan Sheffield fastball broke the fifth metacarpal in his left hand. Returning to the team for the Gainesville Regional, Alonso went 8-13 (.615) with three home runs and eight RBI in three games.

Super Regional Dates set:

Florida will host Florida State in the Gainesville Super Regional for the second consecutive year.

The Super Regional will begin Saturday night (6 pm ET), with a second game on Sunday (6 pm ET). A third game, if necessary, would be played on Monday.

A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
