Wingo enjoys his Florida Gators official visit

Most of the official visitors that were on campus this past weekend were commits but it was a chance for the coaching staff to develop an even better relationship with those guys.

Linebacker commit Derek Wingo (6-2, 210, Fort Lauderdale, FL. St. Thomas Aquinas) was one of those commits on campus and he was able to accomplish his goals for the trip this weekend.

“Everything went good,” Wingo said of his official visit to Florida. “I finally had a chance for my parents to see everything and get to see the kind of day to day life I would have so that was good for them. For me, I just got a chance to hangout with the guys.”

Wingo was hosted by a former high school teammate of his and that made the weekend go smooth for the Gators commit.

“Tre [Grimes] was,” he said on who his host was. “It was easy with him because we went to the same high school and we have known each other for awhile so everything that he was telling me about the preparation and the dedication that their coaching staff has for you.”

While on the visit, Wingo had a chance to go over film with the Gators coaches even more and learn more about his future position with Florida.

“I was able to go over film with Coach [Christian] Robinson and Coach [Todd] Grantham on how they want to use me in their schemes and develop me,” Wingo said on his talks with the coaches. “They want to use me at the money backer to play both in space and cover. Also some off the edge and blitzing too.”

Head coach Dan Mullen also explained to Wingo that the Gators are looking for him to come in and be a leader for Florida’s defense.

“Coach Mullen just said how he wants me to be the leader of the defense,” he said on his talks with Mullen. “He wants me to call all the plays and get everyone lined up on defense.”

INSIDERS TAKE: Wingo will sign with Florida on December 18th and will enroll at Florida in May.
