What can the Gators expect from new receiver commit Jordan Pouncey

On Sunday night the Florida Gators received some good news on the recruiting trail when Texas transfer receiver Jordan Pouncey and his brother defensive back Ethan Pouncey (6-1, 160, Winter Park, FL. High) committed to Florida.

Both prospects were on campus on Saturday to watch the Florida Gators knock off Florida State and the older Pouncey explained why he decided to commit to Florida on Sunday.

“I’m a Florida boy,” Pouncey said on why he committed to Florida.

Pouncey who will is a redshirt sophomore will have to sit out the 2020 season unless he receives a waiver from the NCAA.

The receiver who played in seven games in 2018, followed that up by playing in five games in 2019 before deciding to transfer.

GatorCountry talked with InsideTexas writer Eric Nahlin to preview what the Gators can expect to get out of Pouncey when he arrives in Gainesville in January when both he and his brother plan to early enroll.

“Jordan Pouncey was a late addition to the 2017 Texas class after the arrival of Tom Herman,” Nahlin said of Pouncey. “He didn’t have the cleanest fit for a staff that probably emphasizes that too much. He wasn’t a big target in the boundary, though he has the reliable hands of that type of player. He wasn’t a matchup nightmare in the slot like Lil’Jordan Humphrey and Devin Duvernay, but with solid short area quickness he would have been a chain mover in that role. And he didn’t have the coveted long speed of the preferred outside field receiver, though he isn’t slow. Not great at anything but good at a lot of things is a good way to sum Pouncey up.”

What Pouncey brings to the team on the field is just half of what the Gators will get from the receiver as he known as a great teammate and leader in the locker room according to Nahlin.

“He was also a favorite of the coaches, known for his work ethic and positive attitude,” Nahlin said. “He’s a great locker room guy. He’s also an engaged student who embraced being a UT student as much as football player. I know I echo the sentiments of many of his former teammates and coaches in wishing him the best of luck in Gainesville.”

The Pouncey brothers are very familiar with the Gators as they’re cousins with Maurkice and Mike Pouncey.
