Vereen says the Florida Gators are in his top group

Saturday’s spring practice was a packed one for the Florida Gators as a lot of prospects from the Southeast were in town on unofficial visits.

Tight end Javonte Vereen (6-4, 205, Havelock, NC. High) was on campus for his first visit to Gainesville.

“It was my first time, Coach William [Peagler] told me to come up for visit,” Vereen said of his visit to Florida. “Looking to come back for an official visit soon.”

Vereen has been talking with tight ends coach William Peagler over the phone a lot but the tight end was impressed by the assistant coach when he met him in person.

“I see the type of dude he is, he’s a laid-back chill dude,” he said on his impressions of Peagler. “In practice, he will get on you if you do something wrong, that’s the type of coach that I want to coach me. He can push me to the max, he’s a great coach and great dude, and a great person to be around. That’s the type of people I want in my life.”

Before the Gators went to practice, Vereen had the chance to sit and watch film with the tight end group and he learned how he would fit into the offense.

“I sat in the tight end room watching the plays earlier around 9 o’clock,” Vereen said on if he knows how Florida uses his position. “It fits me well, what I do in high school it’s similar to it. A lot of corner routes, flood routes, and stuff like that. It fits me very well.”

Vereen also had the chance to meet with head coach Billy Napier and introduce himself to the Gators’ head man.

“I met Coach [Billy] Napier and talked to him for a good 10 minutes on the field after practice,” he said of meeting Napier. “We just talked about my recruitment and the school and stuff like that.”

The Gators haven’t offered Vereen yet but he says an offer from Florida would be big for his recruitment.

“Right now, yes it would be,” he said on if an offer from Florida would be big for him. “I would throw them in my top, come back for an official and put them in my top five for my commitment. Once the offer happens, I will throw them in there. I’m going to make my decision on June 30th.”

Next up for Vereen will be three more unofficial visits and then the tight end plans to take official visits.

“Spring and summer,” Vereen said on when he wants to take official visits. “I have a couple of schools that I’m probably going to go to, NC State, Florida, Louisville, Alabama, and maybe one more.”
