For an entire offseason, Tramell Jones Jr. competed for the opportunity to become Florida’s starting quarterback. On Sunday evening, he learned that opportunity would belong to Aaron Philo.
“Definitely understand, definitely disappointed,” Jones Jr. told the media.
But Jones Jr. isn’t letting the outcome change his approach moving forward.
“After the decision, I had two choices to make. I could either lay my head down, shy away from the opportunity, and let my teammates see me down. That’s not the kind of energy you want to hold. Or option two, I can keep competing, I can keep working, I can keep getting better, I can keep developing in the offense, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do.”
Head coach Jon Sumrall has been adamant that winning the quarterback competition doesn’t guarantee the job for the entire season. So while Jones Jr. was disappointed by the decision, he knows he still needs to be ready if his opportunity comes.
“You work all offseason, you want to be the quarterback here, you want to play. Being the quarterback at the University of Florida is different, and that’s exactly what I wanna do,” Jones Jr. said. “I’m going to keep working, I’m going to keep learning the offense so that when my number’s called, I’ll be ready.”
“I have to prepare like I’m the starter because you never really know what’s gonna happen out there in the game, but I’m gonna be preparing just like I’m the starter,” Jones Jr. added.
There was plenty of outside noise surrounding Florida’s quarterback competition. Fans, media and even players can take sides when two players are competing for the same job. But inside Florida’s locker room, Jones Jr. said the competition never fractured the team.
After the decision was announced, his teammates made a point to remind him that their belief in him hadn’t changed.
“They love what we have internally as a program. We built something this offseason that can’t be broken,” Jones Jr. said. “So after the news was broken the guys were really like, ‘I mean that’s fine. We believe in both of the guys and we believe that both of the guys can go out there and win the game for us’.”
The redshirt freshman has experienced plenty of change and competition during his time in Gainesville. Jones Jr. arrived at Florida in the spring of 2025 while recovering from a significant leg injury, then worked his way up the depth chart that fall before entering the starting quarterback competition in 2026.
Through the injuries and coaching changes, Jones Jr. believes the adversity has accelerated his development.
“When you go into a situation no matter what it is, just put your head down and work. When you compete, it brings the best out of you and the best will be shown,” Jones Jr. said. “I think that’s just brought the best out of me the past two years, and I think the growth and development has been drastic because of those things.”
Jones Jr. isn’t losing sight of the bigger picture. He’s still a second-year quarterback getting valuable first-team reps, and he plans to make the most of them.
“I’m gonna stay on course, and I’m gonna keep going. I’m gonna keep pushing. I think, of course, being a second-year guy, taking first-team reps, it is a blessing, and I’m grateful for it. I’m grateful for the opportunity, but I’m gonna keep on going.”
