Thoughts of the Week: February 18 – February 24

We are in the heart of the college football dead season for just a few more weeks and then we are in spring practice mode, so enjoy the rest and relaxation – I know I will because I am heading to Cancun on Friday!

Let’s look over this past week.

Trusting Internet Chatter

Twitter is my favorite Internet web tool. It is awesome. If you think Twitter is just about reading about what folks had for dinner or where they are traveling, then you are wrong. It is the fastest source of information in the world and news breaks on Twitter for almost every major event.

While Twitter is great, it is also unrestricted and news can travel quickly. An example of that has happened many, many times, which requires you to always look at Twitter (like all news) with a grain a salt until more is confirmed. While this is just a silly example, it happened again on Monday when 2017 defensive back Nick Roberts announced that he was committing to Florida. He posted it and a major recruiting source “Sleeper Athletes” announced it, too. Once that happened, it spread like wild fire. Unfortunately, Roberts not only was not an accepted commitment, he does not have an offer to commit, even if he wanted to. While, I am unsure of Roberts reasoning behind announcing it, many people thought that he would be the Gators first 2017 commitment and started tweeting it as fact.

Therefore, always take the Internet with a grain of salt, until confirmed. It’s always better to be right than wrong.

NFL Draft Combine Ruse

Everything that we know about the draft has already been opined about by countless folks and what you think you don’t care about knowing about will be under the microscope for the next two months.

The NFL Draft Combine is a beautifully crafted disguise by the NFL. It’s perfect. Hear me out.

NFL teams are looking at probably 75-plus players to join their team. Those players play in probably 30-plus states in 60 different cities.

NFL teams do a lot in terms of preparation – watching film, background checks, discussions with coaches (college and high school), and more. But more importantly, they interview players and they do medical tests/physicals. Ding, ding, ding. Instead of flying all over the country, let’s fly 200-plus athletes to Indianapolis and they can interview as many as they want and then disguise it as a skills competition. Many players will put up numbers that draft analysts say will have them “skyrocket” or “have the bottom fall out on their draft stock”, but I am not sure I agree. I think interviews and physicals are what determine that, rather than 40-time or broad jump. Are those numbers important? Yes. But there are countless ways to get that information.

The combine is about preparation and teams can look at 200-plus players ability to prepare in one setting. It’s genius.

Softball Shock Stat

The Gators softball program is 16-0 and have outscored their opponents 139-18, including eight shutouts. Are you kidding me? The 2014 National Championship Florida Gators are well on their way to being the overwhelming favorite again and I would not be surprised to see them repeat.

Tim Walton and Co. – helluva job.

By the way, between women’s lacrosse, women’s tennis, softball, soccer, track and field, and gymnastics, does Florida have the best women’s athletic program in the America?

Song of the Week

Nashville is my favorite city in the world. It is full of life and great music. A few years ago, I was visiting and at “Legends”, Matt Mason was playing. He won CMT’s Next Superstar in 2011, but unfortunately, it doesn’t look like he will be. However, he does have some good music. Worth a listen.

  1. Yup, Nashville is awesome! Been going there for several years with a group of guys for a “boys’ weekend”. Love Roberts Western World and Tootsies. We actually played a gig at Tootsies in the back room back when we were actively gigging (outside of our day jobs). Had not heard of Matt Mason, but I like the stuff you posted. Thanks for sharing!
