On Saturday, the Florida Gators hosted several prospects on campus for the first junior day under Jon Sumrall.
Tennessee defensive back commit Kamauri Whitfield (5-10, 185, Orlando, FL. The First Academy) was on campus and enjoyed his time around the new staff.
“The visit was great,” Whitfield said of his visit to Florida on Saturday. “We met the new staff, ate some food, toured the facility and campus. Then we went and watched the basketball game.”
Sumrall’s coaching staff impressed Whitfield during the visit with their energy and desire to win.
“My impression was that they’re a coaching that wants to win,” he said on the coaching staff. “They were very energetic when we met with them.”
Whitfield plays all over in high school but he says new defensive coordinator Brad White wants him at nickel.
“They want me at nickel,” Whitfield said of the coaching staff. “I talked to Coach [Chris] Collins and Coach [Brad] White mainly. Coach White said he likes the edge I play with and how I can fly around and line up anywhere in the secondary. He likes that I can run stunt games with the defensive line and cover anybody on the field.”
Safeties coach Chris Collins talked to Whitfield about why the Gators like his game and what stands out to them.
“Coach Collins preached on my work ethic,” he said. “He said I motivate him to work, and my football IQ and versatility stand out to him. He likes how I fly around the football.”
Head coach Jon Sumrall also sat down with Whitfield and explained why the Gators like him and that he’s wanted in Gainesville.
“How much he loves my film,” Whitfield said on Sumrall’s message to him. “He said he gets pumped up watching me fly around the field and that he doesn’t want me to be anywhere else besides Florida.”
Now that Whitfield has met the new coaching staff, he says the Gators are now in the mix for him for several reasons.
“Florida stands pretty high,” he said on Florida’s standing for him. “There willingness to change the program around and just to win with energy stands out.”
