One of the more impressive feats of Jon Sumrall’s first two months on the job came almost instantly, as Florida secured its early signing day class just four days after his introductory press conference.
The Gators signed 17 of their previously committed 19 players, only losing four-star running back Carsyn Baker and three-star tight end Kekua Aumua.
Florida fended off top-tier programs for elite prospects such as wide receiver Davian Groce and edge KJ Ford. The Gators also flipped four-star safety Dylan Purter from LSU, bringing their 2026 high school class to 18 signees.
A major challenge for any first-year head coach is navigating the wacky schedule that currently exists in college football. Sumrall wasn’t just trying to sign athletes to the University of Florida, he was also helping Tulane’s high school class, successfully signing 12 players to a program without a head coach.
On top of that, Sumrall was in the middle of preparing for his American Conference Championship Game, which took place on December 5, the same day as early signing day.
“Those kids, they signed knowing me for 48 hours basically. Like interpersonally. That’s a lot of faith, man, for what you’re going to put your future in,” Sumrall said.
Florida’s class ranks 16th in the country, largely due to its small size. However, its average recruit rating of 90.92 sits 12th nationally, which many would consider an elite transition class.
Sumrall didn’t take any credit when asked about his high school class on Wednesday morning. Instead, he applauded Katie Turner, Florida’s Assistant Athletic Director of Recruiting Strategy, and Savannah Bailey, Florida’s Senior Director of Player Relations and GatorMade.
“If it wasn’t for Katie Doeker, previously Katie Turner around here, we would not have signed anybody,” Sumrall said. “If it wasn’t for Savannah Bailey and our GatorMade program.”
“I asked all the parents and recruits, what made you choose Florida — that’s probably the coolest thing about this signing day press conference, if you will, is we lost two commitments, okay, two, with the coaching change. That has nothing to do with me. That has everything to do with Florida and the other people that were involved in those young men choosing Florida,” Sumrall added.
Sumrall asked each of his commits why they chose Florida.
“The University of Florida is a special place in every way possible. When I Zoomed and talked on the phone with all the committed families and prospects, they all were like, man, GatorMade is awesome. Katie has been awesome. Academic support here in our Hawkins Center, like, big time,” Sumrall said.
Their last inquiry was football related, and Sumrall’s answer was simple.
“Their last question was, hey, what’s football going to look like. I’m like, we’re going to win.”
