Stability equals success: George Gumbs Jr. eager for second season at UF

George Gumbs Jr. started his collegiate career as a 210-pound walk on receiver at Northern Illinois. Four years later, he’s my candidate to lead Florida in sacks in 2025.

Much like Gators’ running back Ja’Kobi Jackson, Gumbs Jr. had his high school recruitment negatively affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic. The Chicago native held offers from Bowling Green, Western Michigan, and was beginning to spark interest from Big Ten teams before communication went dark.

This led to Gumbs Jr. taking a chance on himself and walking on at a Division I school rather than dropping to the Division II or FCS ranks. That was just the beginning of his chaotic journey, however. Gumbs Jr. would go on to play wide receiver and tight end throughout his first two seasons at NIU. It wasn’t until the 2023 season where he switched to defensive end and earned a scholarship.

Florida saw a raw athlete with untapped potential in the transfer portal, bringing him in as a projected depth piece along the defensive line. After adding 18 pounds to his frame in his first offseason at UF, Gumbs Jr. led Florida’s edge rushers in snaps and ranked second on the team in tackles for loss (8) and sacks (5) in 2024.

Entering 2025, the sky is the limit for Gumbs Jr. as he finally found some stability throughout his collegiate journey.

“I’m very excited. My big thing coming into this year is stability. My upbringing through college is all over the place, so this is my first year where I can build off another year under the same coach and at the same position. It’s going to be fun,” Gumbs said on the upcoming season.

Gumbs Jr. was focused on becoming more of a leader throughout the offseason as one of three redshirt seniors on defense.

“It has been a good camp. Just focusing on my leadership skills and honing down on all my skills as an edge rusher. It has been pretty fun,” Gumbs Jr. said on fall camp. “I try to bring the energy every day. Uphold the standard. I try to tell guys I want communication, effort, flying around, that is kinda my big thing. I want guys to talk and have fun.”

Gumbs Jr.’s work ethic cannot be denied given his difficult path to potential stardom in the SEC. He believes there’s still plenty of room to improve despite entering his final season of college football.

“I can grow a lot, all the time, that is one edge I have on other players. The ability to learn and take coaching,” Gumbs Jr. said.

Sophomore edge rusher LJ McCray suffered a lower body injury that’s expected to keep him out for some time. This provides the highly touted freshman Jayden Woods a chance to make an impact at the JACK position.

“He’s been good as well. Jayden Woods, he do a very good job. He’s smart, he play hard, so I can’t ask more from him,” Gumbs Jr said on Woods.”

Gumbs Jr. is projected to start across from Tyreak Sapp in 2025. The 6’4, 250-pound edge rusher brings a different level of athleticism to Florida’s defensive front. With a more polished set of pass rush moves, Gumbs Jr. could be a force for the Gators this season.

Gumbs Jr. has his eyes set on a sack total that hasn’t been reached at UF since Jachai Polite did it in 2019.

“Double digits. 10 the minimum.”
