Gator Nation had its doubts when Florida turned to a second straight Group of Five head coach in Jon Sumrall. Fair or not, the comparisons to Billy Napier surfaced immediately.
The uncertainty quickly disappeared when Sumrall took the mic at his introductory press conference. He brought grit, passion, and undeniable confidence. Acknowledging Florida’s championship standard, he made it clear this isn’t a rebuild, but a mission to win in year one.
Words are easy, though. What came next were actions.
Just days after an encouraging first impression, Sumrall was able to sign an overwhelming majority of the Gators’ 2026 recruiting class, even flipping a four-star defensive back from LSU.
The class ranks 16th nationally despite just 18 signees, according to 247Sports. Florida’s average recruit grade of 91.44 ranks 11th in the country. It’s a great, borderline elite transition class.
Sumrall also moved quickly to secure his coordinators, naming Kentucky’s Brad White as defensive coordinator and Georgia Tech’s Buster Faulkner as offensive coordinator.
White has been a defensive coordinator in the SEC for seven seasons, seemingly getting the most out of a Kentucky program that’s struggled to keep up in the NIL era. Faulkner is among 15 semifinalists for the 2025 Broyles Award, given to college football’s top assistant coach. Faulker brings a versatile background and the ability to adapt to Gainesville.
Sumrall won the press conference, kept a talented recruiting class together, and hired two great coordinators, all while coaching Tulane to an American Conference Championship.
The next step for Sumrall is roster retention, a priority he emphasized during his introductory press conference. Coaching in today’s game is more demanding than ever. It’s not just about recruiting high school talent and adding pieces through the portal; It’s also about retaining your own roster, a task especially difficult for a first-year coach inheriting a 4–8 team.
Many coaches around the country will tell you roster retention is the most important factor in building a program, including Sumrall. Before Florida dips into the transfer portal that opens up on January 2nd, they need to work on retaining the talent they do have.
While some roster turnover is expected with a coaching change, Florida simply cannot afford to lose key players to the transfer portal: Wide receivers Dallas Wilson and Vernell Brown III, running back Jadan Baugh, edge rusher Jayden Woods, and linebacker Myles Graham, just to name a few.
Despite Florida’s 4-8 record in 2025, the Gators have talent across the roster—building blocks that could set the stage for an early success story under Sumrall. It’s the next step in what’s been a successful start to his tenure in Gainesville.
