Florida Gators hire new DL coach

Dan Mullen has named his new defenisve line coach.

David Turner will be named the Gators’ next defensive line coach, leaving the University of Texas at San Antonio where he held the same position.

“David is a great addition to our coaching staff and the Gators football family,” Mullen said. “We spent some time together at Mississippi State and he has produced numerous first-round picks in the NFL over this 30-plus years of coaching. Having spent 16 years in the SEC, he understands that this is a line of scrimmage league and our defensive line will continue to play fast, physical and aggressive under his leadership.”

Turner has been coaching for more than three decades and has a wealth of experience both coaching and recruiting in the SEC. Turner coached No. 1 overall pick Myles Garrett when he was at Texas A&M, he coached Fletcher Cox at Mississippi State and many other future NFL defensive linemen (listed below). Turner has spent 14 seasons total at SEC Schools (listed below).

There is familiarity between Turner and Mullen. Turner coached at Mississippi State on two occasions. First he coached defensive linemen from 2007-09 and then returned to Starkville in the same role from 2013-15.

Turner will replace Sal Sunseri who left Florida to join the Alabama staff in his same role.

UPDATE: Turner changed his Twitter profile on Sunday and tweeted a goodbye to his UTSA players and coaches.

Nick de la Torre
A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
