Recruits react to Florida Gators’ defensive staff changes

This offseason is an important one for Billy Napier and the Florida Gators football program and on Monday he decided to move on from two coaches on the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive backs coach Corey Raymond and defensive line coach Sean Spencer were both let go by Napier as staff changes were expected after the disappointing season.

News of Raymond and Spencer leaving Florida was a surprise to a lot of recruits as several prospects spent time with both coaches on Saturday.

GatorCountry caught up with several prospects to get their reaction to the firing of Raymond and Spencer.

Texas A&M defensive line commit Dealyn Evans- “Two words, Mike P.”

JUCO defensive lineman Malcolm Alcorn-Crowder- “It’s sad he got fired because I was just getting to know the coach [Spencer].”

JUCO defensive lineman Brien Taylor- “Man it wasn’t something I wanted to hear. Me and Spencer was just starting to get closer. He’s a real cool dude that will guide you outside of football.”

Defensive back commit Xavier Filsaime- “I’m telling y’all now I’m not going anywhere,” he said on Instagram

Defensive back Gregory Smith- “I don’t really think much of it. It’s not that surprising. It’s a business decision by the head coach, it happens. I’m still interested in Florida.”

2025 defensive back Chris McCorkle- “It’s honestly just crazy to hear. I hope he finds somewhere great. It doesn’t change anything for me.”

Defensive lineman Michai Boireau- “I was in practice when it happened, just kind of found out but yeah I mean all I can really say is that this changes a lot.”

2025 defensive lineman Myron Charles- “I’ve just heard about this; he was one of the main coaches that talked to me and tried recruiting me to get there.”

Defensive back commit Josiah Davis- “I’m 100% locked in,” he tweeted.
