Notebook recapping Mullen’s comments from Media Day

The Florida Gators started off fall camp on Thursday when the Gators held their media day just one day before the Gators take the field.

Head coach Dan Mullen was first up to talk to the media about his team heading into Friday’s start of practice.

GatorCountry brings you a quick notebook to recap what Mullen had to say about the Gators on Thursday.

  • Mullen says they got good news on Thursday regarding the eligibility of Van Jefferson and Trevon Grimes. He says they’re still waiting on a few things from the SEC on Jefferson but expects everything to be good.
  • The excitement level from fans and the players is something that Mullen says he’s feeling and seeing.
  • Mullen says he texted Urban Meyer on Wednesday night with his prayers but hasn’t spoken to him yet.
  • Megan Mullen is very involved in the program and helps with a lot of situations according to Mullen when asked about the involvement of his wife in the program.
  • Decision making is something that the coaching staff talks with the players about on a daily basis.
  • Any suspensions will be announced on game day but not two minutes before kick-off.
  • A timetable on when a starting quarterback will be named is something that Mullen doesn’t want to have. Mullen says he would like to have a clear-cut decision and be comfortable with the starter. He says he also needs to have the second guy ready.
  • Lack of consistency has been the biggest problem the last few years for Florida according to Mullen.
  • Mullen says he expects to compete for a championship with this team this year.
  • The next few days will show how much the guys have developed over the summer.
  • Nick Savage’s program has been good for team building and Mullen hopes the mental edge carries from the weight room to the field.
  • Mullen thinks theirs is a lot of excitement around recruiting but that guys want to see things on Saturday because a lot of guys haven’t seen the offense.
  • Strong defenses will win games and that’s something Mullen knows is a priority.
  • When asked what Mullen likes about Todd Grantham, he says his passion and intensity and his knowledge of the entire defense stands out. Mullen says he likes a defense that plays with an edge.
  • Keivonnis Davis and Justin Watkins are no longer with the team.
  • All players are expected to practice on Friday but some will be limited and not 100 percent.
  • Mullen called the lack of scoring on offense as shocking for him as a Gator fan.
