Notebook: Dan Mullen press conference post spring scrimmage

The Florida Gators had their first scrimmage of the spring on Friday night as the Gators continue to roll through spring practices.

On Monday, Dan Mullen spoke to the media to recap the scrimmage, plus give his thoughts on the spring so far.

GatorCountry brings you a quick notebook to recap what Mullen had to say during his press conference.

  • They’ve had a couple of good weeks of practices and say the two weeks are big for the team.
  • Most of the installation is done now and in the two weeks they will recognize what the team does well and what part of the playbook they will keep.
  • Mullen says you will recognize some of the offense and some of the offense will look different. He says a lot of similarities.
  • They have a lot of playmakers and Mullen says they will continue trying to find the best ways to get them the ball to make explosive plays.
  • Teaching a lot of the foundation in all three phases of the ball is something that they’ve done this spring.
  • Mullen says he’s evenly watching both sides of the ball in practice, he says in the meeting room he spends a little more time in the offensive rooms.
  • Mullen says they stayed healthy during the scrimmage on Friday.
  • When Emory Jones arrived in Gainesville is when they noticed his arm strength and ability.
  • Mullen says he doesn’t get into injuries when asked about Demarkcus Bowman.
  • Emory Jones will allow them to tweak the offense a little more and Mullen says he makes some throws that Kyle Trask couldn’t.
  • Mullen says he likes the approach of his team of becoming more of a team instead of individuals.
  • Mullen says the quarterbacks did some things but they limit what they can do like not as many quarterbacks run.
  • They rotated a lot of guys in the scrimmage so that everyone had pretty much the same amount of reps at the end of the scrimmage.
  • The end of the spring to the start of fall camp is a big time for the players, as they have to do a lot on their own to continue their development.
  • Donovan McMillion is playing safety for the team right now, Mullen calls him a high-energy guy who’s an intelligent guy.
  • Mullen says they hope to have Diwun Black on campus in May and they will see where he will play once he gets on campus.
  • Keeping the same attitude and understanding the game situations is something Mullen wants the team to continue into the next week.
  • Playing with more tempo is something that Mullen wants to see during scrimmage number two.
  • The older guys have been helping the younger guys when things don’t go right or something needs to be fixed.
  • Mullen says Emory has a stronger arm than Kyle and can make some of the deep throws that Kyle couldn’t. Mullen says Trask is more accurate of a passer.
  • Mullen says Trask game translates well to the NFL and some team is going to be fortunate to get him.
  • Mullen has always had confidence in Todd Grantham and having the spring will give them the chance to identify the players and put them in better positions.
