No.13 Florida vs USF roundtable

Andrew Spivey, Gentry Hawk, and Nick Marcinko preview Florida’s week two matchup vs USF with our roundtable discussion, where we discuss keys to the game and give our score predictions.

What are the keys to Florida’s offense vs USF?

AS: The offensive line needs to step up on the right side of the line after struggling with some assignments against LIU. It will be interesting to see if Caden Jones and Rod Kearney get more playing time with the starters.

GH: The keys for Florida’s offense this weekend start with DJ Lagway and the offensive line. USF gave up a total of 378 yards (256 passing) against the Broncos, and Lagway could have a big day if Florida’s offensive line performs as expected. The right side of the line struggled last weekend and I want to see that change on Saturday.

NM: Florida has to execute along the offensive line to maximize their chances vs USF. There were too many missed assignments vs LIU that led to tackles for loss. USF missed 19 tackles in week one; lean on Jadan Baugh to tire out the Bulls defense.

What are the keys to Florida’s defense vs USF?

AS: The defensive line showed up last week and that’s the key this week again but they must keep their eyes on Byrom Brown this week. Brown will run the ball so containment is a key.

GH: I think it’s clear that the key for Florida’s defense will be stopping QB Byrum Brown and making it difficult for him to use his legs. Brown recorded 43 rushing yards on 14 attempts with two rushing touchdowns in the win over Boise State. If he has a similar performance on Saturday, the Gators could find some trouble. Set the edge and get to the QB often this weekend.

NM: Containing quarterback Byrum Brown is Florida’s top priority on Saturday. The Gators have to rush the passer with discipline and avoid getting behind him. I like Florida’s speed in the front seven in this matchup.

What freshman would you like to see more of in week two?

AS: I really liked what I seen from the linebackers last week but I would like to see more of Myles Johnson. It will be tough for him to find snaps this year with the linebacker room being so good but Johnson is so fast and athletic that I believe he can make a difference.

GH: I want to see more of Vernell Brown III in week two. I think VB3 deserves to be a featured receiver this season after his performance last weekend.

NM: I want to see freshman edge Jayden Woods, who was excellent in his 13 snaps vs LIU, grading as Florida’s fourth best defender in week one according to PFF. Woods plays with discipline which will be needed against this USF offense. Woods understands how to set the edge which we be key against the Bulls’ rushing attack.

After watching the LIU game, what’s one improvement you would like to see from the Gators vs USF?

AS: The kicking game, Trey Smack is a weapon but he needs to regain his form from last year.

GH: Offensively, I want to see better execution against a better team. Against LIU we saw the Sharks record a total of 11 TFL due to lack of execution on certain plays in the first half. The offensive line needs to play better and make it easier for DJ Lagway to find his rhythm on Saturday.

NM: I want to see Florida clean up some of their missed assignments. The tight ends, wide receivers, and offensive line all missed key blocks vs LIU. I also want to see DJ Lagway play a cleaner game regarding his pocket presence and making the correct reads.

Score prediction?

AS: 42-14 Florida

GH: Gators win 38-17

NM: 31-13 Florida
