Nay’Quan Wright will enter the transfer portal

Gator Country has learned that running back Nay’Quan Wright will enter the transfer portal as a graduate student.

Wright took to social media to announce his decision.

“To my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Gator Nation, the University of Florida, Gator Football, and all of my brothers, past and present; it is with my sincerest gratitude I wright this to you all,” Wright wrote on a Twitter graphic.

“I have forged unbreakable relationships, earned a degree from a Top-5 Institution, all amongst living out my dream to play for the Gators. I will forever be indebted to the many coaches, support staff, and countless individuals who have empowered, supported, and advocated for me along the way. My family deserves an endless amount of love and thanks for having my back through thick and thin, wins and losses, and everything in between. While my experience as a Gator has been invaluable, it is with a full heart and optimism for the future that I announce I will be entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer this December with 2 years left to play college football.”

The Miami Carol City product was a four-star recruit in Florida’s 2019 class.

In Wright’s four seasons as a Gator, he carried the ball 189 times for 753 yards and five touchdowns. His most productive year came in 2021, where he ran for 326 yards and a score on the ground, adding 178 receiving yards and a score through the air.

Wright got his first chance to lead the pack in 2022, as he started the season as the Gators’ primary running back. However, it was impossible for Billy Napier to keep Montrell Johnson and Trevor Etienne off the field. This caused Wright to only appear in seven games this season as Lorenzo Lingard eventually took over the RB3 role.

Wright just doesn’t have the physical upside that other running backs in the room possess.

Wright has two years of eligibility left due to the Covid year and can enter the portal at any time because he’s a graduate transfer.

The departure of Lorenzo Lingard and Nay’Quan Wright leaves Florida with just two scholarship running backs on roster entering the offseason. The Gators hold a commitment from Trinity Christian Academy’s Treyuan Webb and may be looking to add another running back from the high school ranks.
