McElwain wants Davis to be a Florida Gator

Florida Gators coach Jim McElwain has made no secret that his top priority this recruiting class is to get offensive playmakers and offensive linemen to help the Gators poor offensive showing the last few years.

One of McElwain’s biggest targets is athlete Javarius Davis (5-10, 173, Jacksonville, FL Ed White) who McElwain spoke to at length a few weeks ago.

“I talked to Coach McElwain a couple of week ago on the phone,” Davis said. “He said he’s going to get Florida back to where they used to be and that they need a couple of pieces on offense to get there.  Coach McElwain said that he wanted me to take an official visit to Florida and have sit down talk with him. He said that he hopes that I’m a Gator.”

Davis plays running back, slot and cornerback in high school but McElwain sees Davis as an athlete that can do a lot of things on offense.

“He said that they would try to get the ball to me in a variety of different ways from the slot receiver position and running back position,” Davis said. “ He said that I’m special player with the ball in my hands and that they need me at Florida. Coach McElwain also said that I could play some special teams too.”

Not only has McElwain made Davis a priority but new offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier also sees Davis a big target and the two parties spoke on Sunday night.

“I talked to Coach Nussmeier on Sunday night about Florida,” Davis said. “He said that they are going to bring in new stuff on offense at Florida and that they were going to be real good on offense. He said that he wants to get me the ball as much as he can on offense and special teams.”

Monday night the Auburn Tigers entered the picture as Will Muschamp offered Davis and now the Tigers are in line to get one of Davis’ four official visits.

“I’m going to take an official to Florida,” Davis said. “I’m going to an official to Auburn and Georgia also. I’m going to take four official visits so my Florida official visit will likely be during the week one week. I’m not sure on my fourth visit.”

With Davis’ uncertainty about when he will take these visits and the destination of his fourth official the Florida coaching staff will need to make sure they take advantage of the opportunity that have when Davis steps foot on campus.

“The official visit to Florida is very important because I need to get to know the new coaching staff at Florida,” Davis said. “Coach Muschamp and I have a good relationship with each other so I just need to see how I bond with the new coaches at Florida now.”

INSIDERS TAKE: Auburn is going to be the Gators’ biggest threat here as Davis really likes the relationship he has with Will Muschamp. Surprisingly enough the Gators weren’t that big of threats when Muschamp was at Florida but McElwain and co. have gotten Florida back in the race.

  1. Spivey, I thought champ couldn’t recruit anyone UF was unless auburn was already recruiting them before he got there? You said champ just offered so I would think this falls in the category of that scenario.
