Coach McElwain impresses Burgess during Florida Gators visit

Tuesday was the second to last chance for prospects to visit the Florida Gators this spring for a practice and a few Tampa prospects took advantage of that opportunity in Gainesville.

One of those prospects was cornerback Juwan Burgess (5-11, 185, Tampa, FL Plant), who had an interesting and jammed pack day on Tuesday.

“It was great a time, I had a blast” Burgess said. “I took a visit of the school and took a visit of the new indoor practice facility. I went in the Swamp and went to a real Swamp to see a few Gators. We had to leave right before practice, but we got to talk to the coaches before we left.”

All prospects get the chance to meet with Florida head coach Jim McElwain, but Burgess felt a feeling he had never felt before with McElwain on Tuesday.

“It was great to sit down with Coach McElwain, the whole little talk we had I just felt great, it was a feeling that I had never felt before with a coach,” he said of McElwain’s talk with him. “He was just saying, like that I’m my own company and I’m the COO of the company and I can only make my company better. So me coming to Florida is a plus, plus situation for me and my company.”

Defensive backs coach Torrian Gray has been recruiting Burgess since his sophomore year so Tuesday was more about catching up with each other more than anything.

“He told me that they are recruiting me at defensive back,” Burgess said. “I loved my conversation with Coach Gray and he was telling me the same thing that he was telling me at Virginia Tech. He said he wants me to come to Florida so he can coach me up. We have a good relationship with each other.”

Heading into the visit Burgess had a lot of interest in the Gators but this visit helped Florida’s chances even more.

“This visit helped Florida out with me,” he said. “My interest in Florida is high but everyone asks me if Florida is at the top of the list and I tell them that I’m taking visits right now so I don’t want to have a list. I want to take my time and do my homework on schools.”

INSIDERS TAKE: Burgess said that he’s going to Miami on Thursday and that he’s hoping to get back up to Florida for the spring game on Friday. Right now the Gators are recruiting Burgess at cornerback, but he’s a guy that can play cornerback or safety in college.
