This week’s Spivey Senses podcast focuses on Florida Gators recruiting and how the Gators are doing on the recruiting trail after winning the SEC eastern division championship.
Andrew Spivey and Nick de la Torre are joined by Florida Gators recruiting commit Isaiah Johnson as well Sleeper Athletes’ Michael Robinson as they both talk Florida recruiting.
Robinson helps the guys break down how the Gators are doing in South Florida and who is responsible for the Florida Gators recruiting success down there this year.

Nick: What’s up, Gator Country? That’s right. It’s Tuesday, and you’re listening to Nick de la Torre again. Back to back weeks invading Spivey Senses podcast. Andrew, thank you for leaving the door unlocked.

Andrew: What does lit mean?
Nick: Don’t worry about it.
Andrew: Lit to me just means fire as well, like lit, fire, awesome. Does it mean that? Sorry if I’m calling somebody, my luck it’s some cussword, and I’m telling people to do something bad to themselves or something. Who knows? I don’t know. Maybe I should stop using that language. Nick, I got a jam packed show, buddy. I let you come on, but I got my buddy Michael Robinson from Sleeper Athletes coming on with me. He’s a very good friend of mine, very good friend of the show, of you, of Gator Country. Does a great job down there. Then we also have a surprise. I’m bringing the enemy into territory tonight. Wide receiver commit Isaiah Johnson from Dwyer, and guess who Dwyer plays this week?
Nick: St. Thomas.
Andrew: Your Raiders.
Nick: The mighty fighting St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders.
Andrew: I think I may be picking up some, but you guys will hear that in a few. I’ll let you know when I bring on Isaiah, but, Nick, a couple things real quick. Gators have two weekends of recruiting before the SEC championship game. Quite a picture going for Florida a little bit, and that is that Florida has these two weekends to recruit, then the Monday following the FSU game coaches are allowed to go on the road to do recruiting. Florida’s not going to do that, because they’re going to have the SEC championship game, and they lose a weekend for official visitors of that weekend they’re in the Georgia Dome. Of course, Florida will do all the recruiting they need to by being in that game, but they’re going to try to get more prospects on campus these next two weeks to make up for that lost weekend.
Nick: I think it is a lost weekend. Being able to say, “Johnny, I’m not going to be in your school on Monday, because we’re preparing for a game that all the coaches you’ll see on Monday aren’t preparing for, because their teams weren’t good enough to play the game that we’ll play in on Saturday. Just keep that in mind when Mark comes down and sees you at your school on Monday, or when Jimbo comes down to see you. Just know that he’s not in a conference championship game, and that’s why he’s there.”
Andrew: Mark Richt will say, “I’m doing my job. I’m 9-3.” Right? Or no?
Nick: Yeah. What I was saying is it helps that you’re one of only a handful of games that’ll be on Saturday, but you can’t really take away how important it is for those face to face visits. For Florida getting kids on campus these next two weeks is very important.
Andrew: Again, the week after the SEC championship game they’ll be hitting the road fiercely, because the Monday of the 7th is the week after the SEC championship game. They’ll be able to host kids on the 12th and 13th, and then that following 14th is when the dead period goes in. Florida really has a week to get as many visits as they can. They’ll probably hit as many early enrollees for in home visits as they try to get those guys in for those visits on that weekend of the 13th, before the dead period starts. Again, not a bad thing at all. Everybody wants to be in the SEC championship game, and that is nothing but air time for the Gators. Nick, I think there’ll be some guys coming in these next two weekends that’ll be good for the Gators, including Lamical Perine will be on campus this weekend, first time after his Alabama offer.
Nick: That’ll be interesting to see. We’ll see what the environment’s like. Another noon game. Not a very good opponent. We’ll see what the environment’s like, hopefully with recruits coming in for FAU this week it’ll be a good environment. You know that the Florida/Florida State game will be lit, because that’s Florida/Florida State. Hopefully the recruits that come in this weekend aren’t treated to an empty, quiet stadium.
Andrew: I don’t think it will be. I think Coach Mac will have them fired up. I think that winning will put some butts in the seats. I don’t think it will be 90,000, but I would say 78, 79 overall. We’ll see. We’ll see overall how it goes. Nick, let’s go on to Sleeper Athletes, Michael, and get this show rolling.
Nick: Let’s do it.
Andrew: We’re back, Gator Country, with my man, Michael Robinson from Sleeper Athletes. Sleep, how you doing, buddy?
Michael: I’m good. Just looking at the last minute film of everyone now that the regular season’s over. I’m kind of checking up to see how everyone did this season and give my report here soon. How’s it going with you guys?
Andrew: 9-1 up in Gainesville. Recruiting’s good. I can’t speak for Nick, but I can speak for myself, I’m doing great.
Nick: I’m enjoying covering a winning football team. It’s not bad there.
Michael: There you go.
Andrew: Sleep, you kind of hit on what I was going to ask you about a little bit. You’ve got to see some guys this year. You know the guys that Florida are targeting. Is there anybody that has really stood out this year that has maybe opened your eyes to say, this guy really is a good player? You mentioned at the beginning of the year it was Aaron Robinson that had a good year, but is there anybody that’s really caught your attention as of late?
Michael: I really like, I saw recently CJ McWilliams that I believe he’s committed to you guys, right?
Andrew: Absolutely. Yes.
Michael: He surprised me. I knew he was good, but I actually got a chance to see him in person, and he’s a lot better than I thought he was, much better than I thought he was. I hadn’t really seen him but in seven on seven, and he looked pretty good, but I don’t really go by that. I go by what I see in pads. He looks real good.
Andrew: What have you seen from Aaron Robinson? I know you got to see a couple of his games. he’s a guy that has fallen under the radar, because of guys like Chauncey Gardner and other big commits. What have you seen so far from him? Has he lived up to that first game against Victor?
Michael: I think he’s still solid all the way across. When I went to the game last night at Plantation they’re mostly a running team, and a lot of teams that he played against were basically running teams. He didn’t get a lot of throws his way, not a lot of interceptions or anything like that, but whenever they throw his way it’s no completion. It’s pass broken up. He’s just solid all around. If there was a spread team out there throwing it 40 times a game I’m sure he’d have a lot more stats, but every time I see him out there he’s probably one of the best corners down here.
Nick: Where do you see him excelling really? Is it press? Is it man? Is it zone? Where does he like to play?
Michael: I think he prefers man, because I’ve seen him when receivers go off the line he’ll tell them to move up, come on. Challenge me. He’s a guy that is confident enough, I believe, to play in any coverage, but I think if I was to make a preference for him it would probably be man for him. I think he loves man coverage.
Nick: Sleep, Andrew doesn’t know, but that’s just the south Florida thing. That’s just the south Florida swag thing. Come on, come up here and challenge me.
Michael: Absolutely. That’s all it is. Same thing with another one of your targets, Sam Bruce. The last game I went to against Flanagan he would tell the corners, come on up here. If you can get me, come on.
Nick: They don’t want to do that.
Michael: That’s exactly what it is.
Andrew: I know this is a guy that you don’t cover as much as others, but a guy like McArthur Burnett, he’s a guy that you and I have talked about. If we didn’t see him in person every now and then we’d think he was fake. We would think he’s a ghost. He’s that kind of person. What have you heard about him? What do you know about his game? Is he like the rest of the Pahokee athletes in that he’s just a guy that is a good athlete?
Michael: He is what I call one of those, in a different term, a sleeping giant. He’s very quiet. He’s not very outgoing or anything like that. He’s not a talkative kind of guy, but he’s just a tremendous athlete. I used to send his film out to like Oregon, and they loved him. Georgia, as a running back, and I know a lot of people liked him as a DB, but he’s just that good of an athlete. He returns kicks, punts, running back, DB. The kid is just a great athlete, but he’s quiet. He’s reserved. Really good kid. Love the kid. He’s respectful. Great kid. He’s going to be one of those sleepers that come in and surprise some of those Gator fans.
Andrew: He fits the bill for sleeper athletes then. Real quick, you’re a guy that gets around to a lot. Anybody that doesn’t follow you on Twitter should, @SleeperAthletes. You get to see a lot of guys, talk to a lot of guys. What’s the general perception down there of this Florida Gators program?
Michael: It’s bigger down here than Miami, of course. Obviously if you look at what Miami’s doing. It’s bigger than Florida State. It’s probably the biggest name down here, simply because of how much you see orange and blue down here. During their bye week all I saw was orange and blue. I think I saw four coaches down here. It may have even been more than that. You got a lot of guys that are committed down here. That’s really all you see, and a lot of targets as well, even if they’re not committed to Florida. You got a lot of targets down here that all they talk about is did you see that Florida game? Did you see the game that they played against Vanderbilt? They know players. They’re more knowledgeable about the Florida players and the Florida coaches then they are any other school. It’s a huge perception down here.
Andrew: Is that more Randy Shannon? Is that more Florida winning? Is that more Mac? Is there one thing, or is it just the school in general?
Michael: It’s a little bit of everything. It’s Randy Shannon, because he’s from down here. It’s Kerry Dixon, because he coached down here at FAU and FIU. It is Coach Mac, because they do see him on TV in the post-game interviews. A lot of them have visited up there in Gainesville and loved the campus. It’s a little bit of everything. They see them winning. They see Antonio Callaway from down this way doing big things, along with Treon Harris. They’re both Booker T Washington guys, so they see those. They see these guys that are out there playing, Quincy Wilson’s from down here, and Jordan Scarlett’s from down here. They know these guys, and they’re like, if Quincy can do it, and if Jordan can do it, I can too. I want to be a Gator. That’s kind of how it’s working for them.
Nick: I was going to ask that. Quincy, Jordan Scarlett, Cronkrite, there’s a lot of south Florida guys, and I think that kind of plays into it. Look, I grew up with him, or I play with his brother. I watched him play growing up, modeled my game after him a little bit. Look what he’s doing at Florida. Maybe I can have that kind of same success. I think getting players from the area, and then having those players have success on Saturday can also be a big factor into recruiting. If you’re doing it in south Florida, which has the best talent in the state, and some of the best talent skill position wise across the country, that’s going to pay dividends for you in recruiting.
Michael: Absolutely. These kids are very impressionable. I don’t know if it’s everywhere, but I know in south Florida they want love. Show me some love. That kind of thing. When they see the kind of love that those guys are getting from Florida, Cronkrite, the Scarletts, those guys are playing, and they’re doing well, especially Callaway. Everybody is shocked by what Callaway is doing at this point. It’s huge for prospects here. They love to see it. They’re very impressionable. They love to see what they’re doing, and they’re like, I want to be a Gator.
Andrew: Before we get you off, I know you’re a busy man, wanted to get your thoughts on a couple guys real quick. Of course, probably the two biggest names on the board for Florida in the south Florida area right now are Sam Bruce and Benjamin Victor. Do you still see those guys sticking with Miami in Bruce’s case and leaning to Ohio State? If so, do you see that changing, or is that just kind of where it’s going to go?
Michael: I see it still panning out that way. I still see Sam Bruce going to Miami, that is if they hire the right guy, and if Kevin Beard stays the receiver coach, from what I was told. The only way he leaves is if Kevin Beard leaves. If they hire someone like a Mario Cristobal or something like that he’ll more than likely stay, because he’s going to keep Kevin Beard on staff. Benjamin Victor, I think he’s a lean towards Ohio State. I still believe he’s a little bit open to Florida. I think he’s open to some other places. I think Tennessee is in the mix as well, but I wouldn’t say for sure that Victor’s going to go to Ohio State, but there is a lean there. I think that he’s kind of torn between Florida and Ohio State right now.
Andrew: Is there any guy that maybe I haven’t brought up that you think, this guy has a chance to go to Florida, or Florida has a great shot to get this guy?
Michael: I really believe that there is a slight chance that you steal Emmett Rice from Florida State. I’ve heard some things about him liking Florida. His teammate Vosean Joseph is already committed there. I think that’s a possibility. Other than that, otherwise you guys are in pretty good shape as far as everyone that you’re targeting moving forward. I think Emmett would be one that may be a shocker on down this way. I know there are some other guys around that are looking at Florida, but they’re 2017, 2018 guys.
Nick: Florida’s definitely in the market for another linebacker there with Rice playing outside linebacker at New Orleans.
Andrew: Definitely. Sleep, again, man, I appreciate everything you do. Guys, if you don’t follow this man…
Nick: One more question.
Andrew: Okay. Go ahead.
Nick: Sleep, are my St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders going to overcome the loss of Jake and the loss of Bosa and make another state championship run?
Michael: I think you do. I think Roger and the staff have both Fillichio, who’s your new starting quarterback. They kind of simplified the offense for him, and they’re kind of opening up the offensive playbook a little bit more to him every week. I think with those big losses St. Thomas reloads every year. I mean, you got guys sitting the bench at St. Thomas that are Division I athletes bar none. Bosa and Jake and stuff, those are losses, but there are some pretty good guys that will fill in there, and I think they’ll end up still winning the state championship.
Nick: Go Raiders.
Andrew: I’m going to go ahead, Sleep, and say it right now. Dwyer upsets St. Thomas this weekend.
Nick: How dare you?

Michael: Sounds good. Dwyer barely beat the 2-8 Ely Tigers in the playoffs, 14-13. You got to watch that. Dwyer might be on the hook, you never know.
Andrew: I have faith in Dwyer. Speaking of Dwyer, Sleep, following you is Florida commit Isaiah Johnson, so I might be trying to butter him up a little bit.
Michael: There you go. Nothing wrong with that.
Andrew: Definitely. Welcome back, guys. I got Isaiah Johnson from Dwyer High School. Isaiah, it’s a big week for you. You go up against St. Thomas in the playoffs. How are you doing, and how’s the season going for you, buddy?
Isaiah: Season’s been going good. We’re playing good as a team. I had a pretty good year. Hope we win this week.
Andrew: Definitely. Nick is a St. Thomas guy, so it might be a little split. He might be rooting for St. Thomas, but I just picked Dwyer, so I need you guys to pull it out for me.
Isaiah: We’re going to pull it out.
Nick: I’m outnumbered here. Obviously Isaiah’s picking himself and his team to win. Andrew’s picking Dwyer to win, and I got to stick with my Raiders.
Andrew: There you go. Isaiah, you’ve had a chance to be at several Florida games this year. What’s your impression of the Gators so far this season? What have liked and maybe not liked so far?
Isaiah: I liked everything, from the atmosphere to how Coach Mac coached, how he spread the ball around, the way they’ve been playing. They’ve been playing great. I just like everything up there.
Andrew: What’s been your impression of the atmosphere compared to, not really before Coach Mac, but what have you seen the atmosphere grow this year? Have you seen it get better? What’s your impression of it? Do you think they’re behind the program?
Isaiah: I definitely believe they’re behind the program. They love the Gators. Every game is crazy, it don’t matter if they’re playing the number one team in the nation, the game’s going to be crazy. That’s always a positive if you got fans like that.
Andrew: You’ve seen the offense with Coach Nussmeyer. Freshman Antonio Callaway’s had a good season as well. How do you really feel like you can fit into that offense? Where do you see yourself fitting in at?
Isaiah: He told me I can move around, depending on how big I get. If I grow to a two tight end I can play a two tight end. If I don’t get that big I could play at X, play in the slot, and that’s with linebackers and safety. He said it’s really going to be on me.
Nick: When you talk about that two tight end that’s more of like DeAndre Goolsby, what #30 is doing. It’s kind of like an H back tight end role.
Isaiah: Yes.
Andrew: What have you seen from the offense? What do you like about the offense? It’s more of a passing offense now. What have you seen from that offense that you’ve liked?
Isaiah: I like the way that they just spread the ball around. They get everybody touches. That’s the most thing I liked.
Andrew: Let’s dig in a little bit here. You’ve been recruited by a lot of top programs. What does Coach Mac do differently than say Auburn or NC State? You don’t have to go into anything specific, but what does he do differently? Is there anything that maybe he’s more calm, or anything like that that kind of separates Coach Mac?
Isaiah: I would say he’s more like a cheer person. He’s not going to pressure you into committing, not going to pressure you into any decisions. He’s going to let you decide on your own. If you pick Florida he’ll welcome you, but he’s not going to pressure you. That’s one thing I saw different and that I like out of him.
Andrew: Is that something that as a prospect is kind of, I don’t want to say it’s okay. Nobody wants to be pressured, but is that different? Do a lot of coaches pressure you, without naming names?
Isaiah: Yeah. A lot of coaches they’ll pressure you. I don’t really like that. I can’t explain it.
Andrew: It’s kind of refreshing for you a little bit.
Isaiah: Yeah.
Andrew: Definitely. I know you’ve taken some visits elsewhere. I guess, what’s the next few weeks going to be like for you?
Isaiah: I don’t think I’m taking any other visits. I think I’m going to just go to Florida on December 11, and that’ll be my last visit. Then I’ll be in school in January.
Andrew: Is there anything you want to do as far as getting bigger or anything like that when you get to Florida? Is there one thing you really want to do besides learn the playbook? Do you want to get faster? Do you want to get bigger? Is it just kind of keeping your weight right now?
Isaiah: I want to definitely get bigger and get around 235. It’s harder to cover a big guy like that. I want to definitely get bigger.
Andrew: Right. Nick, anything for the Dwyer kid?
Nick: Yeah. The season that Florida’s having, did you expect that? I mean I know you probably talking to the coaches heard what they wanted to do, but did you expect that Florida would be 9-1 with already winning the East, a chance to go to the college football playoff? Did you see this coming?
Isaiah: It definitely blindsided me. I thought they were going to be better, but I didn’t think they were going to be like a contender in the first year.
Andrew: We just talked to Sleeper Athletes about that in the south Florida area. Have you noticed that more guys are talking about Florida, more guys are interested in Florida now that Florida’s doing well?
Isaiah: I think there’s going to be a couple of flips. A lot of guys are really liking the Gators now.
Andrew: Is there one guy you’re working on that you really want to join you in Gainesville?
Isaiah: I want Ben Victor to come.
Andrew: Two big receivers to go with you. Isaiah, we really appreciate you coming on. I know Nick’s not going to give you good luck, but I’m going to say good luck this week. Go Dwyer.
Nick: I’m a better man than you. I will say good luck, Isaiah, but go Raiders. Good luck, but go Raiders.
Andrew: Isaiah, before we get you off, any message to Gator fans?
Isaiah: I don’t even know.
Andrew: They’ll see you in Gainesville, and you can make your message then. Isaiah, we really appreciate you joining us, and we’ll be talking to you soon, buddy.
Isaiah: All right.
Andrew: Nick, I’m glad you handled that well. You kept it real with the Dwyer guy. You were nice. Go Dwyer this weekend.
Nick: Go Raiders. Go STA. STA pride. Not going to wish the man bad luck before what will probably be his last high school football game. Going to wish him good luck, but just know in my heart that the Raiders will find a way to get the W, even without their quarterback and their best player.
Andrew: I think they’ll win as well, but go Dwyer this weekend. Go Dwyer. We’ll just see.
Nick: We’ll add that into our Friday prediction podcast. St. Thomas and Dwyer will be one of the games we pick.
Andrew: That’s fine. We can do that. It’ll just be another loss for you.
Nick: Not happening.
Andrew: It is what it is. We had two good guys. I talk about, and I can’t speak for you, but I consider the three major parts of the state of Florida Jacksonville, Tampa, and south Florida. Those are the three parts you need.
Nick: I would consider it West Palm Beach Country, Broward County, and Dade County.
Andrew: I consider all of that south Florida.
Nick: That is all south Florida, but those are 1, 2, and 3. In no particular order.
Andrew: I’m saying those are the three areas of the state that are usually traditionally rich. Jacksonville and Tampa, in my opinion, are two places that no matter how bad Florida is they’re going to be able to go in there and still get good prospects, but I feel like south Florida it’s like Sleep said. It’s like they’re very impressionable guys down there. They’re going to go with the winners. When Alabama was getting on top and starting to do really good that’s when you started to see that happen. You see that with Florida State the last few years with Travis Rudolph, Ermon Lane, Cooke, those guys. I think it’s an impressionable thing. Randy Shannon certainly doesn’t hurt things.
Nick: No. Randy Shannon doesn’t. I think it’s a sneaky recruiting tool, the guys from the area flourishing and thriving and succeeding. I think that really does play a role into it. It’s guys that for somebody like Isaiah Johnson he probably saw Fred Johnson playing growing up. It’s like, look Fred Johnson’s playing as a freshman. He started a game. He’s making an impact. This is a guy that I grew up with. We had the same coaches. Why can’t that be me? I think that, even as much as Randy Shannon, and how deeply ingrained he is into Miami and into south Florida recruiting, I think seeing guys that you know, guys from around the neighborhood, succeeding and doing it early is also as good a recruiting tool probably as you can get.
Andrew: Yeah. We said it last year when Treon got on the field and started playing. That was huge. Same way with Callaway. Those guys are huge. I say it all the time. Treon’s like a legend down there. His family is big time names down there. Jordan Scarlett’s the same way. Quincy Wilson’s the same way. You still see those guys recruiting for Florida to this day, because they’re all buddies. They all play on that same youth team. They all play middle school ball or high school ball together. It’s just a big group of friends down there with a lot of these big name athletes.
Nick: Yeah. Everybody down there, it’s maybe a little different. I was going to say everyone down there knows each other, but someone from Homestead might not know somebody from Dwyer. It’s starting to come a little bit closer with all these seven on seven teams. In Miami you probably know about Ice Harris, about Treon Harris. That’s a very important Miami football family. To see somebody like Treon leave Miami, because that’s a big thing down there is a lot of people want to stay in Miami. When the University of Miami was doing well it was because Howard Schnellenberger was getting all of those guys from south Florida, from Broward, Dade, West Palm Beach, to stay at home. They kind of built a culture of stay at home, win for the people you grew up with, and now you’re seeing those kids leave and do it elsewhere. Kids want to follow in those footsteps.
Andrew: I think that’s another thing about going to a school like Florida or Florida State. When you have guys that are your friends there it’s a little bit more of a comfortability down there. Guys are able to say, if I go to Florida I have Quincy Wilson. I have Treon Harris. I have Jordan Scarlett.
Nick: Kind of a comfort. You’re far away from home, but you have some familiarity there.
Andrew: Right. Exactly. Then there’s a lot of guys, you see it a lot where guys want to get out of Miami. Maybe because they live in a bad neighborhood, or they want to go make their own legacy somewhere else.
Nick: That’s true. Florida’s success isn’t hurting.
Andrew: Absolutely not. We had Isaiah. He’s a guy that I think is a guy that I really don’t know where he ends up. He’s a good football player. That’s it. I don’t know if he grows into a tight end, if he grows into a receiver, what he does, but there’s one thing for sure, and that is Mac will find a way to get him the football. He kind of reminds me of a leaner DJ Hall that was at Alabama, who was a big goal line receiver for them and played a lot of slots, but was just a big receiver for them that went up and got the jump balls.
Nick: You’re talking about a kid who’s 17 years old, already 6’3”, 212. When you hear him say something like I want to be 240 pounds, 250 pounds, you think maybe. That’s not out of the realm of possibility a couple years down the line. Speaking as someone who lost a bunch of weight, it is much more fun to gain weight than it is to lose weight. If I was 212 and somebody told me, you need to be 250, I’d say, absolutely. I’m on it.
Andrew: I think I’m going through that issue right now. Let’s just be honest, going down is no fun. Going up, lot more fun.
Nick: Going up is a lot of fun.
Andrew: Exactly. I think it’s kind of like Sleep said. It’s a thing where there’s a lot of people doing really well down there, whether it’s Randy Shannon or Kerry Dixon, but at the end of the day success gets athletes. So far the Gators are doing it. I think that there will be several more guys from that south Florida area hop on board soon. Just have to see. February’s coming mighty soon.
Nick: This McElwain train, the Mackle train.
Andrew: The Mac train. Get it right. My man Gator Edits, if you haven’t followed him do me a favor. Follow him. He’s helping me do a lot of good stuff. That Mac train I think a lot of people would agree that was fire. That was lit, Nick.
Nick: Anyway, the Mackle train is picking up steam, and it’ll be interesting to see how Florida finishes, both on the field and then leading up to recruiting.
Andrew: Everyone got on Coach Mac for not starting the recruiting cycle with that big flourish like a lot of first year coaches do, but he’s seeing that now.
