“I didn’t see that”: Billy Gonzales denies Gators quit vs. Kentucky

Simply put, the Gators’ 38–7 loss to Kentucky last Saturday ranks among the worst in recent Florida program history. Florida owned Kentucky for decades, winning 31 straight from 1987 to 2017. But in week 11 of the 2025 season, the Gators were the ones dominated.

The Wildcats controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides in a way we hadn’t seen all season, despite Florida’s 3-6 record. It looked as if Kentucky wanted to win, while Florida was just going through the motions. The Gators didn’t seem focused defensively and set a season high in drops with three.

Many Gator fans and media members, myself included, began to question whether Florida had mentally checked out on a struggling season. During Monday’s press conference, Interim Head Coach Billy Gonzales was asked whether he thought the team gave up vs. Kentucky.

“I’ll tell you this, that was my main concern,” Gonzales said. “As I got on the airplane, I watched both sides, offensive and defensively. And then I came back in when I got home in the morning, I came back in early, watched it again, offensively and defensively, to see if anybody was quitting and to see if anybody was loafing. I didn’t see that. And I asked — we had a staff meeting and that was my main question in the staff room, is did anybody quit? In the locker room at halftime?
Absolutely no. Was it acceptable that we lost that? No, it wasn’t. So what I did, though, is I went to each coach and I asked each coach, ‘Did you see anybody that just blatantly quit and give up? And they said, ‘No, coach. They kept going.’
And that’s what I saw on film.”

Senior cornerback Devin Moore saw the game from a different perspective, notably pointing to “too many lack-of-effort plays.”

“I feel like that definitely wasn’t the standard. Too many mental errors, too many lack-of-effort plays, a lot of guys not running to the ball, like plays we usually make,” Moore said. “It’s going to be an emphasis in practice, every rep we take, having to hone in on those details because you never know when that rep will come alive in the game and be as successful and get back on the right track as quick as possible.”

One thing is clear: if the Gators continue playing like they did against Kentucky, finding another win will be nearly impossible.

Florida is set to face No.6 Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi at 7:00 p.m est in week 12.
