Herbert left speechless by the Florida Gators

Monday was a big day on the Florida Gators campus as the Gators coaching staff hosted several big time players from American Heritage High School on unofficial visits.

2017 offensive lineman Kai-Leon Herbert (6-4, 262, Plantation, FL American Heritage) was one of the prospects on a visit on Monday and he received some big news during the visit from the coaching staff.

“It’s great to get that offer from Florida, the facilities up there are great,” Herbert said. “Coach [Mike] Summers was great to me and Coach [Jim] McElwain was great too. I could see our relationship growing up there.”

Head coach Jim McElwain was the coach that officially offered the big offensive lineman and he had a message for Herbert.

“Coach McElwain was the one that told me about the offer,” he said. “He said that he wants me to be a part of the program up there and that he was happy to offer me a scholarship to the University of Florida.”

Every prospect reacts differently to an offer and Herbert was the same way as he wasn’t sure how to respond to McElwain.

“I was speechless when Coach McElwain told me about the offer,” Herbert said. “After a second I thanked him for the offer and told him that I was interested in Florida. Coach McElwain is a really good guy and I liked him a lot.”

Offensive line coach Mike Summers is known for being a good coach with a laid back attitude. He showed that and more to Herbert on Monday.

“Coach Summers was talking to me about the offensive scheme and he was going over some plays with me,” he said. “He was telling me how much he wants me there and how big of an impact I could make up there.”

McElwain and Summers have some help in recruiting Herbert to Florida as 2017 Florida Gators commit Jake Allen is hard after Herbert on the recruiting trail.

“Jake was my quarterback at my other school so we are good friends,” Herbert said. “He’s trying to get at me a little bit about Florida and telling me he wants me to block for him up there. I’m planning on coming back up to Friday Night Lights with him on Friday.”

INSIDERS TAKE: Kai-Leon Herbert is a guy that could be close to making a decision as he’s very close to Jake Allen and he also likes Florida Gators offensive line coach Mike Summers a lot.

  1. Andrew:: I know landport will say I am not a professional journalist, but I believe when all is said and done with Coach Mac’s career at Florida. He will surely be remembered as one of the two best Head Ball Coaches Florida has ever had. I know Landport will say, oh, he hasn’t coached a game yet. Coach Mac is building something great at Florida. Now, I may not be a professional, bur I am 80 years old and have followed football and especially Florida Football. I have been a Florida Fan for 65 years and have seen most of the games in that time. I suffered with the Gators until Coach Graves came in and brought Steve Spurrier. I never missed a game Spurrier played in and yes, I was there the day he kicked the 40 yard field goal to win the Heisman. During this 65 years I have seen the best and the worst of Gator football. I have learned enough about people, football, and Coaches to tell you, me and all Gator fans we are in for a great ride with Coach MacElwain during his time at Florida. Go Gators!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
