Haskins “wow’d” by his Gator offer on Monday

Florida handed out several offers on Monday. One of the offers they extended was to quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. (6-1, 182, Potomac, MD Bullis) who talked to running backs coach Brian White on the phone.

“I called Coach [Brian] White on the phone and he offered me a scholarship over the phone, it was a great day,” Haskins said. “At first I thought it was a joke but then he told me he had seen some highlights of me at the NFTC camp in DC and that he was impressed by what he saw out of me. He said that Florida wanted to offer me based off of that.”

To say it was a special offer is an understatement, as Haskins said this offer made his day because it’s his first SEC offer.

“The offer means a lot to me honestly,” Haskins said. “Gator country, Swamp it means a lot to me. Florida is my first SEC offer which is special and I really didn’t know Florida was even interested in me until today when I called them. When he did offer me I was like ‘WOW’, that’s crazy.”

While Haskins was on the phone with White on Monday the running backs coach had a message for the sophomore quarterback including how he would fit in at Florida.

“Coach White said that he wants me to get down to Gainesville soon so that I can meet Coach [Will] Muschamp in person,” he said. “Coach White said that if I choose Florida that they are going to be working the offense around me by doing some pro-style and some spread style to make things multiple for me. He said that I really just need to do everything I can to get down to Gainesville for a visit soon.”

Haskins took White’s message to heart and he will sit down with his parents and try to arrange a visit to Gainesville soon, maybe even this summer.

“I’m not quite sure when I will get down to Gainesville,” Haskins said. I’m definitely going to talk to my parents about it and try to get down there this summer so I can meet everyone and see everything in person for myself.”

When Haskins does get down to Gainesville it will be a special time for him as he grew up idolizing a former Gator great.

“I know a good bit about Florida because one of my favorite quarterbacks Chris Leak came out of Florida,” Haskins said. “I used to watch him and Tim Tebow play in the Swamp. I tried to model my game after him and I looked to him to a lot.”
