Andrew Spivey, Gentry Hawk, and Nick Marcinko preview Florida’s week one matchup vs FAU with our roundtable discussion, where we discuss keys to the game and give our score predictions.
What are the keys to victory for Florida’s offense and defense? What would you like to see them accomplish?
AS: I want to see an offensive line that pushes the defensive line back and shows they’re an improved group. With that being, I want to see them hold up in pass pro so that Aaron Philo can get some clean pockets. On defense, I want to see how aggressive this team is going to be because I know Brad White wants it to be fast and physical.
GH: The biggest key for Florida on offense is to play clean and disciplined football. Establish the run game and prove that the chemistry is there. Defensively, the biggest key is getting off the field on third down. That was a big issue for this team in the past and I’d like to see that change this weekend.
NM: The key for Florida’s offense on Saturday is the offensive line play. If the O-line comes to play, the Gators should put up a huge number of points.
On defense, the key is being ready — knowing the play call and being set against the fastest-paced offense in college football.
What’s the most important position group to watch for Florida beyond the quarterback?
AS: OL is easy to say but I touched on that in question 1 so I’m going to say the tight end position. The position has been no existent over the last few years so can someone step up this year?
GH: The offensive line is the most important position to watch on Saturday. This offense will only go as far as the offensive line takes them, and this weekend will give us a good idea of how good this offense can be in 2026.
NM: The offensive line will tell the story of the season, but for Saturday’s game, the secondary will be key. FAU will throw the ball all game long, and it has an experienced quarterback and several talented wide receivers. Florida’s secondary will be challenged vertically.
Florida has a lot of star power at RB and WR. Who do you think has the biggest breakout game Saturday?
AS: Evan Pryor, I think he has his welcome to the Swamp moment. Also I think you see a huge day from Eric Singleton Jr., I have no idea why people are sleeping on him. Singleton is a star.
GH: There’s a lot of options to go with here, and I think the easy answer is Jadan Baugh, but I’m going to go with Eric Singleton Jr. The Owls’ defense has struggled defending explosive plays in the past, and I think that opens the door for Singleton Jr. to make some big plays in the open field this weekend.
NM: I’m going with Jadan Baugh. (It’s the easy pick , I know.) I have him for 100+ yards and two touchdowns.
What are you looking for from Aaron Philo against FAU?
AS: Clean football. That doesn’t mean just no turnovers but that means getting the team out of the huddle and to the line quickly. Nobody wants to see a team getting to the line with less than 10 seconds left on the play clock.
GH: I think the biggest thing for Aaron Philo this weekend is to play mistake-free football. I want to see how well Philo can operate this offense against a team like FAU. Prove that you can handle the task as the starting quarterback at Florida.
NM: We’ve heard a lot about his command of the offense, so at the very least, I want to see the team lined up properly, making the correct checks, motions and shifts. I want to see a clean game from that perspective. From a gameplay standpoint, I want to see Philo air it out and take some shots down the field. The best offenses in college football can push the ball vertically.
Florida is 26.5 point favorites. What’s your score prediction?
AS: 35-3 Florida wins in blowout fashion and Sumrall says get ready for a great year.
GH: 38-13 Florida
