Florida kicker Trey Smack has been a weapon for the Gators despite a lackluster 3-4 (2-2 SEC) start to the 2025 campaign. After making just two of five attempts in the season opener vs. LIU, Smack has drilled 10 consecutive field goals including three in Florida’s 23-21 win over Mississippi State in week eight.
By adding two more field goals of 50+ yards to his resume vs. the Bulldogs, Smack tied the program record for career 50+ yard field goals with eight, previously set by Caleb Sturgis from 2008 to 2012.
The Severna Park, Maryland native is also one 50+ yard field goal away from tying the single season program record of four set by Evan McPherson in 2020. Smack is one of five kickers in the country with three or more 50+ yard field goals this season.
“A 50-yarder is like is a PAT to me,” Smack said on Monday. “I feel like I have more room to work with the ball when I have that much space because the ball will travel a little bit more on the way down, than it would at the apex. If I’m going to play a little draw it’s going to come back to the left I’m gonna hit the right upright, so.”
Smack took over UF’s primary kicking duties two seasons ago in Florida’s 29-16 upset victory over No.11 Tennessee on September 16th, 2023. Smack would go on to be a Lou Groza Semifinalist as a sophomore, connecting on 17 of his 21 field goal attempts while earning SEC Special Teams Player of the Week and Lou Groza Star of the Week twice (week four and seven).
As a junior in 2024, Smack set a career high 85.7 field goal percentage after making 18 of 21 attempts including 3-4 from 50+ yards and 8-10 from 40+ yards.
Smack’s senior campaign got off to a rocky start. The 6’1, 201-pound kicker set his career long of 56 yards in Florida’s week one win over Long Island, which marks the longest in the SEC this season and ties the second longest in Florida program history. Smack missed three times in the contest, however.
“2 for 5 wasn’t what I was expecting. So, I’m not doing that anymore,” Smack said.
And he hasn’t. In fact, he hasn’t missed since.
“It was a good learning opportunity for me, I think, going in there, missing three kicks is not fun, so having a bounce back week and kind of going out there and saying hey you know what, let’s go have fun this season, we’ll keep doing that,” Smack said.
“Sometimes that’s just how it’s going to go,” Smack added. “Like I said before it was a great learning opportunity for me, and, you know I’m still bouncing back, I’m still recovering from the game, but it’s kind of a new edge, I have a new edge from just that game.”
Smack is now 12-15 on the season (80.0%) including 3-4 from 50+ yards. Smack holds four of the top 10 longest field goals in Florida football history and is 8-11 from 50+ yards in his career.
The Florida Gators are set to take on No.5 Georgia (6-1, 4-1 SEC) on Saturday, November 1st at 3:30 p.m. est. Smack is 2-2 in his career at EverBank Stadium with a long of 53 yards.
