Florida Gators to promote Garrick McGee to quarterbacks coach

With former quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Brian Johnson headed to the NFL, the Florida Gators are promoting Garrick McGee to take over the quarterback room.

A former head coach and offensive coordinator, Dan Mullen brought McGee onto staff as an analyst for the 2020 season.

McGee became head coach at UAB in 2012 but failed with a 5-19 record in two seasons.

Following that, he had stints as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Louisville (2014-15) and Illinois (2016-17). He and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham coached on the same staff at Louisville and coached Lamar Jackson as a freshman.

McGee also has prior SEC experience at Arkansas and Missouri. He coached quarterbacks for the Razorbacks from 2008-09 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2010-11. He served as an analyst and wide receivers coach at Mizzou in the two seasons before he arrived at Florida.

The 47-year-old has 25 years of coaching experience and played quarterback at Arizona State, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, and Oklahoma.

McGee takes over a deep quarterback room for the Gators that includes likely starter Emory Jones as well as Gainesville native Anthony Richardson and true freshmen Carlos Del Rio Wilson and Jalen Kitna.
