Florida Gators recruiting mailbag: September 12th edition

The Florida Gators recruiting efforts have been going strong over the last month and now the Gators are able to host prospects on campus.

Gator Country’s members have a lot of questions about how the 2020 class will shake out and who are the top prospects that the Gators are still after.

We answer your questions in this week’s Florida Gators recruiting mailbag.

Well let’s dive right in to this week’s recruiting mailbag:

Unclenunzio: Any RBs that we are looking at for 2020? And how is our OL shaping up for 2020?

AS: Jahmyr Gibbs is the newest guy to pick up an offer and he plans to visit Florida soon. Right now he looks like the guy that Florida has the best chance with despite him never visiting campus yet. On the offensive line, all eyes are on Marcus Dumervil and Issiah Walker and those are the two guys that the Gators want to finish their class with.

Macbgator: Who are we looking at for LB??

AS: Florida isn’t in good shape with any uncommitted linebackers at this time and it looks like a class of just Derek Wingo may be it for the Gators this year. That’s definitely something to watch as senior tape starts getting evaluated.

MrB-Gator: Are we looking at any Juco DB’s?
And maybe a Juco QB if FF leaves early?

AS: Right now the only JUCO player that Florida is really after is receiver Omar Manning. The staff feels good about the current defensive back class without adding a JUCO guy but I could see them potentially going after a JUCO safety later in the process. As far as quarterback goes, I don’t see them going after a JUCO guy there.

Burton92: Do you know whether or not Dumervil and/or Walker have talked to bowman about going to UF? Have you heard whether either one are part of the group of prospects trying to recruit other players?

AS: Right now neither of those guys are actively recruiting anyone to Florida but the two prospects do talk to each other quite a bit. Several other Florida commits however are recruiting Bowman and talking to him a lot.

Edwinvincent: How are we pacing with Zykeivous Walker at SDE. What are the available options at this position?

AS: It’s still a Florida/Georgia battle for Walker and the Gators are waiting to get Walker back on campus this fall. The Gators are also in the mix for Donell Harris who says he plans to get visit campus for the Auburn game later this fall.

Liveoak1: Do you feel Jaquavion Fraziars could be a little under-rated ? His film looks pretty good!

AS: I do think Fraziars is a little under rated, he’s got good film and good size and so far he has shown that on the field as well. Fraziars is a guy that really high points the ball and can make things happen after the catch.

Baileyboy1223: Saw Jeffrey Mba dropped a top four with us in it anything new there?

AS: He has some academic issues to work out before things can get serious with him. Mba was back home in France at last check as well.

Gatorfantone247: Who are our 5 most solid commits?

AS: Gervon Dexter, Jaquavion Fraziars, Anthony Richardson, Jonathan Odom and Gerald Mincey would be the first five that come to mind but honestly everyone except Leonard Manuel has said they don’t plan on taking any other visits besides visits to Florida. This is a pretty solid year of commitments for the Gators.

Littlebluelw: Any interest at all in Johnny Richardson from Dexter’s team Lake Wales? He is committed to UCF. Undersized but elite speed and quickness. Currently leads the country in yards and TDs.

AS: Florida hasn’t shown that much interest in Richardson at this time, but if he continues having a good senior year and Florida misses on other guys, I could see them giving him a second look.

Youngace: Have we over taken Bama for Tim Smith at the moment? Is he an ENSD or NSD recruit?

AS: Smith is an early signing day guy and Florida has closed the gap a lot between themselves and Alabama. Smith plans to return to Gainesville for another visit and that shows just how close this recruitment is. Florida has all the momentum right now.

Acewade1: Is the staff recruiting E.J. Smith as a pure running back or for the Percy Harvin position?! I feel like they should take him and Demarkcus Bowman!

AS: Florida has told Smith that they want him as a true running back but that he could multiple in helping in the passing game as well. As far as him and Bowman go, if both wanted in, I don’t think the staff would say no by any means.

Rajingator: There’s been some concern about the health of Antwaun Powell’s shoulder, do you know the status of it?

AS: Everything I’ve been told about Powell’s shoulder is that he’s good to go and that Florida had no concern about it after they checked him out while on campus. It’s definitely something to watch this fall during his season but it sounds like he’s good to go.

Macbgator: How serious are we about RB Jamyr Gibbs from Dalton, Ga.??

AS: Florida offered him on Tuesday night and are very interested in him. Gibbs says he’s setting up a visit to get down to Gainesville to meet the staff and see a game. That’s the next step for both parties.

BCNGator99: Do you feel that the Early Signing Period has changed the recruiting calendar significantly? It use to seem that prior to the implementation of ESD, you couldn’t really tell where most recruits were leaning until the end of their senior season. Now with the ESD, it seems that most recruitments are almost completed by the time a recruit’s senior season starts.

AS: The early signing period has definitely changed recruiting and the calendar. It has changed how important summer recruiting is of these guys and how you must get these guys on campus multiple times before their senior year. It also makes in season recruiting even more important because a lot of teams finish their seasons right before early signing day.
