Florida Gators gymnastics start NCAA regionals in Oregon

Special report on the Florida Gators gymnastics team:

GAINESVILLE, Fla.  – The Gators head to Corvallis, Ore., for April 5-6 NCAA Regional Gymnastics Championships. The NCAA Gymnastics Committee revealed the fields for the four NCAA Region Championship sites Monday afternoon.

2019 marks the start of a new regional championships format.

*         Nine teams compete at four regional sites:

*         Regional First Round – Lowest two seeded teams at each site compete to advance to Day 2 eight-team regional competition

*         Regional Semifinal Round – Eight teams compete, split into two four-team semifinals. Top two teams in each semifinal advance to Day 3 regional final

*         Regional Final – Four teams compete, with top two teams advancing to NCAA Championships, set for April 19-20 in Ft. The field for the NCAA Corvallis Gymnastics Regional includes No. 4 Florida, No. 5 Denver, No. 12 Boise State, No. 15 Oregon State, No. 18 Washington, No. 24 Southern Utah, No. 25 Stanford, No. 32 Iowa and No. 33 Arizona.

NCAA Regional Competition Info:
Of the nine teams at the Corvallis Regional, Florida and Washington advanced to the 2018 NCAA Championships. Five teams among the field look to return to NCAA Championship action – Arizona (2002 – last appearance), Denver (2017), Iowa (2004), Oregon State (2015) and Stanford (2016). Boise State and Southern Utah seeks their first NCAA Championships’ berth.

For the sixth consecutive season, the seeding determined at the time of regional selections will be maintained throughout the championships. Standard bracketing procedures will be followed with teams seeded 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 16 placed on the left side of the bracket and teams seeded 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 and 15 placed on the right side of the bracket.

Gators in 2018 NCAA Regional Competition:
Florida earned its 2018 NCAA Championships’ berth by winning the NCAA University Park Regional with the nation’s second-highest region total. Florida’s 197.725 took the program’s seventh consecutive regional title and Washington took the second spot (196.275) to advance to St. Louis, Mo., for the 2018 NCAA Championships.

First Season of Fantastic Four Format:
The NCAA Super Six format to determine the national team champion was used from 1993-2018.

A new format is in play for 2019.

At the national championship site, the eight-team field compete in two four-team semifinals. The top two teams in each semifinal advance to the NCAA team final.

Andrew always knew he wanted to be involved with sports in some capacity. He began by coaching high school football for six years before deciding to pursue a career in journalism. While coaching, he was a part of two state semifinal teams in the state of Alabama. Given his past coaching experience, he figured covering recruiting would be a perfect fit.
