The Jon Sumrall era started off with a bang as Florida crushed FAU 66-21 in the 2026 season opener. The Gators’ 66 points were their most in a season opener since 1994 and their most in a single game since 2021. Florida totaled 624 yards in the contest, its most in a game since 2020.
Here are my five early takeaways from the game.
Florida’s weapons are as good as advertised
We got to see Florida’s offensive weapons on full display Saturday night. Eight different players ran the ball, while 10 players recorded at least one reception.
Junior running back Jadan Baugh effortlessly ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. He routinely displayed patience, broke tackles and created explosive plays.
Sophomore running back Duke Clark had 65 rushing yards on eight attempts.
Sophomore wide receiver Vernell Brown III hauled in a team-high 116 receiving yards on six catches, including his first career touchdown — a 49-yard catch after a quick pass from Philo. He also recorded a 14-yard run on a sweep.
Dallas Wilson had three catches for 47 yards. TJ Abrams caught a 63-yard pass on a go-route. Bailey Stockton caught three passes for 20 yards and a touchdown.
Florida’s game plan was to get the ball to its playmakers in space, and it did so nearly flawlessly.
Aaron Philo impresses
Aaron Philo commanded the offense at a high level in his Orange and Blue debut. He distributed the ball to his playmakers and, for the most part, did a good job of keeping the ball out of harm’s way. He did throw one interception, but it bounced off the hands of wide receiver Micah Mays.
Philo completed 16 of 21 passes for 275 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also ran for 20 yards and a touchdown.
His best throw was a 63-yard completion to TJ Abrams on a go route, which he hit in stride. He also routinely showed off his elusiveness in the pocket, avoiding pressure and extending plays. Philo was not sacked in the game.
This was not a defense that was going to threaten Florida in any stretch of the imagination, but it was good to see Philo and the offense take advantage of the opportunity.
Florida’s defense disappoints
I anticipated FAU being able to score the ball given its unique up-tempo offense and veteran quarterback and playmakers, but the Owls had it a little too easy for my liking on Saturday night.
FAU totaled 396 yards in the game and found some success running the football at times, which I certainly didn’t have on my bingo card.
Florida’s defensive line seemed to lack physicality and didn’t generate much pressure on Owls’ quarterback Caden Veltkamp. The secondary had some really good moments throughout the game but were beat often on the perimeter.
The defense will be something Florida needs to address before week three.
Clean game
Florida played a relatively clean game, committing just three penalties for 32 yards, with only one coming in the first half.
Season openers can often result in several procedural penalties as the offense hasn’t quite gelled or players aren’t used to playing under the lights, but the Gators were called for just one offensive penalty — a false start on offensive lineman Emeka Ugorji. Two of the three penalties came on defense. Sumrall should be pleased with that aspect of the game.
Creating turnovers
The overall defensive performance was disappointing, but Florida did create three turnovers and stopped FAU three times on fourth down.
Senior safety DJ Coleman recorded an interception on the opening drive and later disrupted a pass that Dijon Johnson came away with for another interception. Defensive tackle Brendan Bett forced a fumble on a fourth-down play that linebacker Myles Johnson recovered.
