Dan Mullen press conference post Early Signing Day notebook

The Florida Gators inked 21 players to the Class of 2021 on Wednesday during Early Signing Day.

The Gators still have room left to add a few more guys to the class in February and Dan Mullen discussed that on Wednesday.

Following Wednesday’s practice, Mullen met with the media to breakdown this recruiting class for the Gators.

Here’s a quick notebook to get you caught up on what he had to say.

  • Mullen says all the Letter of Intents they sent out today were returned to them.
  • The class may not get a lot of media hype but it’s a solid class and he says with practice going on that it might be a good thing that they had a quiet day.
  • Mullen calls this is a balanced class but also points out that they have a complete defense in this class and could run 11 guys out at the different positions with this class.
  • This will represent the majority of the class but they have a few spots open for guys going forward including some transfers with the new transfer rule being put into place.
  • The new transfer rule is something that Mullen says every coach is looking at but the current recruiting rules do not match the new transfer rules.
  • With COVID limiting the staff from going out on the road he says you could see some things changed in the future like coaches not getting to go out as much.
  • Mullen says one thing he would like to see is the coaches on the road less but kids getting to visit the schools more.
  • When Mullen signed Diwun Black two years ago he says he know he would probably have to go to JUCO but they wanted him to be apart of the family because he’s a great kid and a good athlete.
  • At quarterback Mullen says they have two guys who excellent quarterbacks and with the transfers and guys having to play early it’s good to have two guys in the class.
  • Mullen also points out that after this year they will only have two quarterbacks on the roster so both Carlos Del Rio-Wilson and Jalen Kitna could come in and compete to be a back-up.
  • After signing three players from Tampa on Wednesday, Mullen says it’s an area that has a lot of good players and is a huge area for them.
  • Last year Florida had three players practice in bowl prep with them and he says that he would love to have guys in this year and they’re looking into that since they will have more on campus practices this year.
  • At defensive tackle Desmond Watson and Christopher Thomas are two guys that Mullen think can contribute next year since they lose a lot at the position this year.
  • Going forward into February, Mullen says they need to find another offensive lineman or two for the class.
  • Dan Mullen says he views Jeremiah Williams as an inside linebacker and someone who can run the defense but he doesn’t want to pin that position on him until he gets him on campus.
  • Size, length and speed are how Mullen describes the linebacker group. Mullen says Chief is a guy who could play outside linebacker and Diwun is just a great athlete who’s older according to Mullen.
  • “He’s a great long snapper,” Mullen says on why they gave a scholarship to Rocco. “He was a really good tight end on his school team. He’s a guy that can come in and lock up the spot [long snapper] for a couple of years.”
  • Now that the class is signed Mullen says they will now start figuring out who will early enroll but he says a lot of those guys will do that.
