Dan Mullen notebook recapping UT and previewing LSU

Dan Mullen spoke to the media on Monday to recap the Florida Gators 31-19 win over Tennessee last Saturday, plus he talked about the Gators upcoming game against LSU.

The Gators will take on LSU at 7 eastern on Saturday night, which will also be senior night for several seniors who will play their last game in the Swamp on Saturday.

GatorCountry brings you a notebook to recap what Mullen had to say on Monday afternoon.

  • Mullen says they hope to have Trent Whittemore back, Rashad Torrence, and Shawn Davis. are questionable. Jeremiah Moon is out this week but they hope to have him back next week for Alabama.
  • Mullen says they have to execute better and take advantage of things, coach says they left 21 points on the field against Tennessee.
  • Mullen points out how Tennessee was down 10-7 and when Florida gave them the ball back they were down 24-7 after scoring to end and start the half.
  • Not putting the game away when they had a chance is something that Mullen says needs to be fixed; he says it’s the little things like getting the ball on the opponent’s side of the field and not scoring.
  • Strength of schedule is what should matter for the college football playoff; Mullen says you should be rewarded for playing a tough schedule.
  • Mullen says they have a lot of great athletes and that has helped them get as many sacks as they have. He says they want to get after the quarterback by playing tough.
  • Mullen says the 2018 LSU game was a tough physical game and they had both good offensive and defensive drives.
  • It was a big boost to the program to beat LSU in year one of Mullen’s tenure at Florida.
  • Coach says LSU has a tremendous amount of talent and says they have some mismatches on offense.
  • LSU is still a dangerous team with a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball according to Mullen.
  • Mullen says they’re pretty pleased with where the program is at, he says the goal is to get to Atlanta.
  • The 2018 game atmosphere in the Swamp reminded Mullen of the national championship years.
  • Mullen doubles down on the fact that they didn’t try to run the ball against Tennessee. He says they can spend a lot of time figuring out how to run but that it doesn’t fit this team.
  • Mullen says the seniors wanted to get to Atlanta so this season has been a success for them.
  • Mullen says Kadarius Toney understands the freedom he has in the slot to run different routes against certain defenses. Says it just shows how reliable he is.
  • Emory Jones had a package in the UT game but they just didn’t get to him.
  • “Unique” is how Mullen described this recruiting class. He says it will be interesting to see what the NCAA takes as a plus or minus from this year’s recruiting practices.
  • Mullen says he doesn’t know if they’ve had 70 scholarship players available for a game this year or not.
  • Mullen says the advance scouting guys have been working on Alabama for a few weeks now.
  • Mullen says he has already met with a few players about their decision for next year as upperclassmen will have to choose whether to return to school or enter the NFL draft.
