Christopher Thomas explains why he committed to the Florida Gators

On Monday night the Florida Gators picked up their sixth commitment for the Class of 2021 after they hosted this prospect on campus on Saturday.

2021 defensive tackle Christopher Thomas (6-5, 280, Fort Myers, FL. Dunbar) committed to Florida over Florida State on Monday night just two days after visiting Gainesville.

“I would like to thank everyone on my journey and everybody who encouraged me to never give up,” Thomas said. “Your help will never go unnoticed but with that being said I’m 100% committed to the University of Florida. Go Gators.”

Thomas says the decision to commit to Florida was an easy one to him as they have several things he’s looking for in a college.

“They don’t have that many guys on the defensive line and everyone rotates in,” Thomas said on why Florida was the school for him. “They have one of the best defenses and they’re on the rise and Florida is close to both of my homes in Fort Myers and Tallahassee. It was a no brainer.”

Saturday’s visit was an opportunity for Thomas to see what Florida has to offer and he enjoyed being in the Swamp.

“It was a nice visit, I enjoyed it,” he said of his visit to Florida on Saturday. “I got to go into the locker room and chop it up with some of the players and other recruits and get a feel of what it would be like there.”

The Gators defense impressed Thomas a lot on Saturday and he likes how the coaching staff plays multiple guys on the defensive line.

“I like the defense, the defense is an amazing key for me,” Thomas said of Florida’s defense on Saturday. “I really like the defensive line and Coach [David] Turner rotates everyone in because everyone knows the plays and deserves to play.”

On Saturday defensive line coach David Turner and several other coaches talked with Thomas about the Gators.

“I talked to Coach [Dan] Mullen, Coach [Todd] Grantham and Coach Turner,” he said of the coaches he talked to on Saturday. “Coach Turner was just chopping it up because we were trying to get back in contact because my phone was broken and he just said he was glad to have me up there.”

Turner made sure on Saturday to let Thomas know that he was wanted in Gainesville and that helped the defensive tackle realize that Florida was where he needed to be.

“He says I will be a major key to the defense,” Thomas said of where Turner wants him to play. “He’s just trying to get me to Florida and that they can’t wait for me to get there and we’re going to have the best recruiting class.”
