Special report on the Florida Gators soccer team:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 3-0 shutout over Miami Sunday gives University of Florida’s head coach Becky Burleigh 500 career wins. She is the first woman in Division I soccer history to reach 500 wins.
To get the win Sunday, three different Gators scored in an 18-minute second-half span to reach the milestone win for their head coach.
Sunday’s scoring:
After some close chances in the opening 45 minutes, Florida scored early in the second half. Parker Robertsheaded the Sammie Betters’ corner kick to sophomore Cassidy Lindley, located just above the 18-yard box. Lindley’s right-footed strike scored in the far post upper slot in the 50th minute.
Vanessa Kara scored her third goal of the last two matches in the 62nd minute when she touched in the deep cross from Kit Loferski.
Sammie Betters’ scored her first goal of the season in the 68th minute. Roberts’ pass caught Betters making a run down the right side. Her 12-yard angled shot just beat the goalkeeper at the near post.
Worth Noting
- Vanessa Kara scored her third goal of the last two matches tonight. She opened her Gator scoring career with the first two goals in Thursday’s 4-0 win over Florida Gulf Coast.
- Sophomore Cassidy Lindley scored her second goal of the season, with both coming from distance. In the season opener at Florida Atlantic, Lindley broke up a 1-all tie with her 35-yard strike in the 74th minute. Tonight, she started the Gator scoring with her 20-yard shot.
- Senior Sammie Betters scored her fourth collegiate goal tonight and first since the opening weekend of the 2018 season.
- This is the sixth solo shutout for Gator goalkeeper Susi Espinoza and her third for 2019.
Win 500 For Becky Burleigh
Today’s win gave Florida’s Becky Burleigh her 500th collegiate coaching win.
